Torrent(s) - What are they

I've heard of this Torrent thing, but what is it? Is it some sort of FTP software? Can some body gives us a general over view, as I feel I'm not using the Internet to its fullest. Is it safe, can it be abused, stuff like that really. I look forward to your responses.

Re: Torrent(s) - What are they

I dont know the exact terminology, but I think their basically files you download, or the links to the final. Download utorrent, (just google it). It has its own built in search so that you can search for music files, films, tv programs, applications, etc.

The best software to use for downloading mate. Oh and its free!

Re: Torrent(s) - What are they

μTorrent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That gives you more info on utorrent there mate.

µTorrent - The Lightweight and Efficient BitTorrent Client

Theres the link for the download aswell mate.

Obviously theres a chance that certain files may have viruses, but as long as you have a good anti virus and spyware software, you'll be fine.

Re: Torrent(s) - What are they

ISP's are now monitoring the download of p2p files and if your going to use torrents it may be worth your while investing in a ip blocking software such as Peerguardian 2 which is free.

Re: Torrent(s) - What are they

I use torrents all the time mate, theyre fucking ace.

You use a torrent program like utorrent or bittorrent to open .torrent files which you download from the internet from sites like btjunkie.com.

I use btjunkie.com for films because you get comments on quality etc so you know when the copy is too shit to watch

torrentlocomotive.com is good for programs/games
minninova.com is another.

You find the torrent file you want to download from one of the sites and open it (or d.load it if you want to keep the .torrent file but theres no point) then utorrent or bittorrent whichever you use, will download parts of that file from all the people who have downloaded that file before and are seeding it (allowing others to download it from them). The more seeders the file has the faster it will download (in general).

Happy downloading mate.

By the way, it is illegal to download any copyrighted material from the internet, but fuck it, they wont prosecute you unless you do it on a massive scale and sell the films.

Thanks John and Coop for the replies. All i'm interested is in watching the US drama serials, like Smallville.... I just want to watch it and get rid. I have no intention of keeping anything. I should really buy a PVR and record stuff off the telly, but there you go. Once again, thanks to all for the advice.

Re: Torrent(s) - What are they

almost everything I download now are Torrents, it's just so easy search click download done. Im downloading Howard Stern TV shows right now.

A good sight for TV shows is EZTV - TV Torrents Online (eztvefnet.org is now eztv.it) they have the shows up really quick and they have most shows on there, you may as well download them instead of streaming them because it still uses the same bandwidth and the quality is usually better. A good sight for everything is Mininova.

Also the best client to use is Utorrent. I think people don't use torrents because they can't figure out how to get good speeds but once you get the settings right you will get great download rates and it is really simple. This sight will tell you how to increase your download rate with Utorrent.
How to increase download speeds of uTorrent
