Blu Ray versus HD DVD
In the Blu corner (hoho) is Sony backed Blu Ray, in the red corner Microsoft and Toshiba backed HD DVD. Which format will come out on top?

Re: Blu Ray versus HD DVD
I went with HD-DVD because I have the add on for the 360, and the picture was so good it almost made King Kong watchable. I don't actually think it will beat Blu Ray though, come to think of it.

Re: Blu Ray versus HD DVD
You see far more Blu Ray displays than you do HD DVD at the moment so for the time being Blu Ray is winning out.

Not really, PS3 is doing the worst out of the three consoles and is available pretty much everywhere, unlike PS2.

Is that based on anything or is it HUNCH feeling?
I have to say I've been very impressed with the Blu Ray playback on PS3. Maybe it's because all this HD stuff is new to me but it looks and sounds amazing. That said I would imagine HD DVD is much the same. In the end I'm not really arsed which format prevails, for if Blu Ray bombs then I'll invest in an HD DVD player. It's a shame there is a shitty format war in the first place.
And by the way - great artwork LFCfanbymistake.

Yeah, there are about twice as many Blu Ray discs on display in HMV than there are HD DVD, which is encouraging. The prices are a bit lively, though.
I bought five Blu Ray discs in Hong Kong as they're cheaper out there but two of them are locked out as they're region 1, which is odd because the other three work. Does anyone know if there is a way around this? A download to allow multi-region playing would be swell. I tried upgrading the firmware but it didn't do the trick. The discs in question are Region 1 versions of American Psycho and The Prestige.

It's certainly not FACT. I do know that the PS3 is in real trouble, and that saying that it will do the same for Blu Ray as the PS2 did for DVD is wrong. For a start, I'm not sure either of these formats will win. People are currently still happy with DVDs, and by the time most people are ready to upgrade it may be that there's so much more high def on demand that download wins rather than a hard copy format.
Going back to the PS2, I know it was influential, but I thought the DVD player was awful. I had several mates who had one, and I don't think I ever got through a film without them having to reset the machine because it had gone so appallingly out of sync.
I only got the HD DVD for the 360 because it was so cheap, and I have a fly high def telly with very little to show it off. Six months ago, if I had to pick a winner it would have been HD DVD, but now my HUNCH is blu ray to be marginally more successful, but for neither to be the next big format.

Re: Blu Ray versus HD DVD
Blu-Ray will win out mate, and they're planning a blu-ray external DVD for the 360 like with the HD-DVD. As soon as the blu-ray version comes out, it's in my collection.
Blu-Ray is the superior format, you can fit entire hi-defition seasons worth of tv shows on it, you can literally take a hammer and hit the disc and still be able to watch the movie flawlessly.
PS3 will help with blu-ray, but it won't be the break through like with PS2.

Re: Blu Ray versus HD DVD
I wouldn't worry too much. Save your money for a while. There will be DVD players which will play both formats of high def. They are will be pretty expensive, but I'm sure I read somewhere they are making them, or will be making them soon. If thats the case, nobody will lose out.
