'Flynny' had a superb first season at the club after being brought down to the reds' Academy from Falkirk. His form improved steadily throughout the season, and culminated in him scoring in front of the Kop in the final of the FA Youth Cup in 2006. Slight in stature, but big in heart, Ryan's tireless running and eye for goal made him a key figure in the youth cup success, and at the end of the season he was promoted from the Academy a year early to train with Gary Ablett's reserve squad at Melwood.
The lack of competitive games for the reserves meant that the young Scot flitted between the reserves and the academy side, but he retained his place in the youth cup side where he resumed his successful partnership alongside Charlie Barnett. The goals continued to flow for him at youth cup level, he scored at Sheffield United in the quarter final and then hit a brace in the 1st leg of the semi's against Newcastle at St James' Park.
Ryan was a key performer as Steve Heighway's side retained the youth cup in 2007, and he was a part of the reserve squad that was crowned Reserve League North Champions in 2007/08. Ryan was also in the side that beat Aston Vila 3-0 at Anfield in the National Reserve Play Off.
