Tommy Hicks Jnr’ has today spoken of the grilling he and his father received from former TLW owner Dave Usher, before the takeover deal was finally agreed. Tommy, who was a major influence in his father’s decision to invest in TLW, added: “I don’t know how I can convey to Liverpool fans and TLW readers the care that David has put into this decision. There was aggressive questioning of us trying to understand our passion and our commitment. It was all about our passion and commitment, and if there is anything we can do to convey that to people we will do so."
"I don’t think David would have selected us to be the new custodians of this great football fanzine unless he had become convinced that we shared that sense of responsibility that he has.”
Those sentiments were backed up by a TLW spokesman, who said: "Be assured the only thing David is concerned about is TLW being in the right hands for the future. You can be certain he has done his homework carefully and will make a decision in the best interests of the site."
Hicks Snr was quick to allay fears that TLW will be saddled with the debt of the purchase, and insisted that it would be business as usual in terms of the running of the business: “This isn’t a Malcolm Glazer style takeover, there is no debt attached to TLW. We are particularly pleased that Dave and his team of writers will have a continuing involvement in TLW. For us continuity and stability are keys to the future."
Hicks has pledged to fund a major upgrade to the site, and expects work to commence within a few weeks: “We intend to build the best website in the world. We’ve had a look at some plans Dave had originally had drawn up, but we think we can do better and improve on them quite a bit. We believe the fans of TLW will be real excited about what our designers come up with. We expect to have fingers on keyboards within a few weeks.”
