Captain Jack Hobbs and substitute Ricky Sappleton got themselves on the scoresheet as Liverpool - without Harry Kewell - ran out 2-0 winners against Sheffield United at the Saltergate stadium in Chesterfield. The reds dominated the first half and in the second they seemed content to sit back and hit the Blades - including former Everton greats Li Tie and Paul Gerrard - on the counter attack.
Opportunities were missed by Nabil El Zhar, Robbie Threlfall, Jay Spearing and Craig Lindfield but in the end Ricky Sappleton turned his marker on the edge of the box and unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot into the far corner to make the game safe.
We'll have a full report of the game on the site tomorrow.
