Robbie Fowler netted a consolation goal, but the reds' reserves crashed to a 4-1 home defeat to Newcastle United. Luque smashed in a 30 yard free kick to put the Geordies 3-0 up midway through the second half, but Fowler pulled a goal back in the last minute with a close range finish after Zenden's deep cross had come back off the inside of the post. Newcastle went straight up the other end however and made it 4-1 through Finnegan in stoppage time.
