Liverpool's u18 side are still without a win this season after losing 1-0 at home to Barnsley this morning. John Owens fielded a very inexperience side, which was missing the likes of Darby, Threlfall, Flynn and Lindfield, and was weakened further when centre back Laurence Gaughan was ruled out just before kick off having been named in the original starting line up. Barnsley's direct style of football caused the reds' many problems, and the visitors' height advantage was a significant factor throughout.
Liverpool played the better football, but lacked a cutting edge and didn't seriously threaten the Barnsley goal until the second half, when Putterill went close with a header and substitute Pringle wasted a one on one chance by electing to pass rather than shoot.
Barnsley hit the woodwork twice and were denied by several fine saves by Dave Roberts (pictured), but with 17 minutes to go they finally broke the deadlock when centre forward Luke Fedorenko scored with a free header.
Liverpool never really looked like getting back into the game, and the result leaves them bottom of the table with four defeats and a draw from their opening five games. The result was Barnsley's first win of the season, having lost their previous four games.
We'll have a full report from the game on the site some time over the weekend.
