Generic
Seems like everything is completely unoriginal these days.
We went to pick a mate up on Saturday in a part of the town aimed at all the 'young professionals', and driving past all the houses you could see they were pretty much all the same, and all decorated the same inside (beige, furniture from Next (including matching flower photo prints) hardwood floors and huge, HUGE TVs on the walls with SSN scrolling along the bottom. It was an almost soviet-ear level of uniformity.
Then when we were out, it struck me that virtually all the bars were designed the same, playing the same music, and that everyone could be pretty much easily pigeon-holed from the way they were dressed. Either pat sharp hair and doug willis-esque check shirts, or shaven of head steroid abusers. Dressed the same, moved the same, stood the same, drank the same drinks and pounded the fuck out of the same phones.
Life by numbers man, life by numbers.

haha.
To be honest I don't particularly try and be different and doubt very much that I actually am (people who deliberately TRY to be 'original' are quite annoying in my experience)
But it was just something I observed while bored, the homogenization of society at large. (you see this with pubs now, all owned by chains, all the same, nothing to seperate one from the next) and of course lifestyle, there's an accepted lifestyle (only one) to be followed now and it involves being a young professional, living in an 'executive' pad and owning a plasma screen and at least three products made by apple, you must also be well sculpted and tanned.

I think I'm lucky living where I do, to be honest. Brighton can be quite individualistic and some areas such as the North Laine, etc are not quite so homogenised as most towns and reatin some real individuality.
I was discussing something similar with the missus the other day. Well I was talking aboot chain pubs, she listened; probably fucking bored. I think down here in Brighton we are lucky that there are still a few high street/shopping areas/pubs, retailers, clubs who are genuinely independent and not generic.
But if I look at the main shopping street here and the new housing developments; I have to say you make a point that can be applied to pretty much most parts of these isles and certainly areas of where I live.
It’s our own fault; we demand cheap products, standardisation etc, and then we cry when all the individuality is drawn out of society.

That's me buggered on several counts then. White as a sheet, and more moulded than scupltured. And old. And an amateur.

Re: Generic
I went on a cricket tour to a remote village on the Devonshire coastline over the weekend. There was nothing generic about that place, it was like nowhere I've ever been before. It was weird because all the locals were smiling, chatting and being really friendly, whereas in London you DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT.
I do have a thing for great big telly screens though.

That's the problem; you don't want to be lumped as 'the same' but you don't want to try and be intentionally different. It's a catch 22.

Re: Generic
Your right as per usual Section. But hasn't it always been like this? Wasn't there a time when every fucker had one of those "doors" with draping multi-colour plastic? You know the ones I mean. Or when the done thing was having those net things in the window? It's just like clothing fashion really, no?

BBC Text a few weeks ago reported that Powys was the happiest place in the UK - and they were surprised that Powys is so happy, despite not having a Tesco or Marks & Spencer.
Hmmm......

I know what you're saying, but that's more a case of the 'fashion of the day' rather than an entire blueprint for how you live your life.
There a millions of people out there, literally millions, who all effectively live the same life. The world has never been so beige and downright fucking bland.
ANd I tell you what, I'm fucking bored. Bored of formulaic TV, formulaic music, formulaic sport and forumulaic people.
