Car problem, suggestions required within
I insert the key - success.
I turn to first click - half the deshboard lights up - success
I turn to second click - rest of the dashboard lights up and radio comes on etc - success
I turn to third click to start the car - minimal success.
The starter motor doesn't turn over or anything, just nothing happens. So i try again and again and sometimes it starts after maybe 3 tries. Sometimes it takes up to about 3 minutes and possibly 100 turns of the key before start motor turns over.
As soon as the starter motor turns over the car starts instantly so I don't think it's engine related. I also don't think it's battery related either because the when it does decide to give the starter motor a go it starts instantly, which leads me to believe it isnt the starter motor either.
So, what else could it be? If starter motor is fine and battery is fine and engine is fine, then why does it decide it doesn't feel like working. To add, sometimes it just starts first time but the problem seems to be getting worse the longer I leave it and I dunno whether to take it to a mechanic or an auto-electrician. I also hate having to go to them when I don't know myself what the probem is because it leaves you open to being bummed.
I know I'm going to get a load of wrong/stupid suggestions but there might just be a gem hidden in the responses.
Oh and it's a 2002 rover 25 which I hope to be able to pass on to SKI if I get this fixed so come on, I need this!

1. Can of petrol (or other flammable material that doesn't cost a bajillion pounds a gallon).
2. Matches
3. Insurance
Problem sorted.

please do online experiment,
Go outside and start said shed, when you get to the start?final position hold the key key and wiggle it up and down and left to right and see if it fires up .
If not refer to Madstock, its what Rovers were built for.

Re: Car problem, suggestions required within
Ignition switch is a possibility as I suppose it could be a loose wire or something. I might even have a look at that myself in the morning. The lady answers were as useless as one would have expected.
Keep 'em coming.

Loose wiring is doubtful ( lady posters apart , spark plugs pfft), unles you have been messing with it , generally the connections inside the ignition barrell just wear out. You will have to disconnect and replace it , fiddly but not impossible.

Re: Car problem, suggestions required within
I have no idea how old the battery is but the battery never seems to struggle or anything. The starter motor just doesn't kick in. I guess it's probably as old as te car though so maybe 6 years or something?
I was out in it yesterday and I got out the car for something. When I got back in it wouldn't start and i was there for a good 5 minutes trying. Eventually I smacked the ignition area with my manly fist. The car started instantly. I tried it again today though and it pissed itself laughing at me. Luckily I was on a hill though so I just rolled backwards a few feet and jump started it.
As for replacing the ignition, will that have anything to do with the immobilizer? I don't want to go there.

Re: Car problem, suggestions required within
Try jump starting it off another car. If it starts OK then its probably that. Ive had similar problems in the past and it was my battery. It could also be your key. Is it a chipped key dose it have a battery in it.
I doubt its the ignition barrel. But changing it shouldn't interfere with the immobilizer as all the information is held in the key.

Re: Car problem, suggestions required within
nah, the key is just a key. The immobilizer is linked to the alarm.
