Question Writing DVDs

A couple of quezzies as I keep having problems writing onto DVDs.

Q1. What's the best software out there for DVD writing?
Q2. What format does the movie have to be in to go onto a DVD?
Q3. What's the best bit of converting software out there for the purpose of acheiving Q2?

I'm using Nero at the moment. If I'm sticking a 40-50 minute movie onto a DVD it writes fine. If I try a full length movie though it just acts like a twat and waits right until the end then tells me there's been an error. The DVD, although written, is unplayable.

I've also got a bit of software called 'AVI to DVD' or something which is complete gub.

Any help greatly appreciated, I'm wasting fortunes on ruined DVDs.

Re: Writing DVDs

The best bit of software I've ever used for converting DVDs is DVD Santa. Piece of piss to use. Just select the file you want and click burn.

Re: Writing DVDs

You can put any format on a dvd, you need a player that will play that format. A lot of films you download are xvid or divx, the ones I get are predominantly xvid. Tesco have a dvd player that also plays xvid for £20, a Technika. I got one last week, I can get four films on one dvd and I don't have to convert them. Saves times and money.

And using a simple piece of software called Avi fourCC changer you can instantly change the codecs from xvid to divx or vice versa.

What codecs do you have installed on your pc? Try downloading the K Lite codec pack, install it and see if the problem persist. Let us know how you get on.

Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 3.7.0 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 3.7.0 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 3.7.0 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools

Re: Writing DVDs

4 movies on 1 DVD? That's fucked up. Nero usually throws a paddy when I try to put obne film on. Tells me that it'll have to reduce quality or it won't fit. Can fit a .avi file on no problem as long as it's about a 40 minute clip (which is good for Brazzers stuff and the like )

I'll look for the .xvid file extension files from now on.

Thanks chaps.

xvid is a form of avi as is divx. It's possible to get 5 films on one dvd if they are all 700MB. It normally says when you are looking at the file name whether it is xvid or divx.

Re: Writing DVDs

Just to clarify, Dirks method is to use a DVD as a data disk and play .avi's natively on his player. This is not a DVD movie.

To ensure it plays on all DVD players though, is the second approach (and the method Kopite68 seems to be using, Im guessing NeroVision) by using some DVD authoring software to convert .avi's into the correct media type (MPEG II since you asked), which will then get put into a DVD Movie (with .vob's instead of .mpeg). There is a bit more to creating a DVD though, as there are menus and other shite. Cant just smack an mpeg on a disk and burn it.

So, after all that waffle, my advice to Kopite68 is to check the type of DVD you are creating (make sure its a DVD Movie), and make sure the media you are using is DVD+R 120 minute recordable. Also, your pc might be shite and its running out of resources by writing an entire movie (or your DVD writer is shite), in which case try slowing down the write speed (it will default to something like 4x, try 2x etc).

Re: Writing DVDs

Winavi is also a really good program, as quick as any I have come across for avi to dvd conversion. I actually have not been able to convert a file for months because every time I start the process in winavi or dvd santa, it will start then just the program will just disappear as if it where never open. Anybody got any clue at all what could be up ??

Re: Writing DVDs

I use legally bought DVD's. DVD piracy is crime - don not accept it.
