Recommend me a non *f sports book.

Outside of the obvious sport we can't mention here, I suppose I'm mostly into Cricket and Tennis.

I would recommend Ed Smith's On and Off the Field as a great cricket book of recent years. A really good, well written solid account of an England Hopefuls county championship season and rise to international player (albeit short lived. A good rounded story of a county in transition, Kent at that time had a bit of a playboy attitude towards the game, the book doesn't dish dirt but certainly those who know the county game would see the personalities at play in that Kent side.

I need to get my teeth into something different. I haven't read the Lance Armstrong book of a few years ago yet, which I hear is excellent. I would also consider reading a good boxing book or in fact any inspirational text. I think I'm in need of a good story of triumph over adversity.

Any recommendations? and perhaps leave your own interests and request for a type of non *f book.

Re: Recommend me a non *f sports book.

cricket - The Longest Wait by the esteemed cricket writer (and my brother in law) Bruce Talbot.
but my real recommendation for a sports book is a Boxing book.
Unforgivable Blackness by Geoffrey Ward
The story of Jack Johnson the first black heavyweight champion

A great read, not just about the fighting culture of the time, but also about the prejudice in society and Johnson's attidude towards it which made him one of the most hated men in america.

Steven my boy, a cracking Boxing read is 'Blood Season' by the sadly departed Phil Berger.
Its a good book....about the Heavyweight scene in the 80s and the emergence of Mike Tyson.
Dickie Bird's autobiography is a good read, as is the Barry Sheene book.

Oh...as is War Baby, its a great Boxing book, about the Benn-McLellan fight...by Kevin someone or other...I forget the author now. You should be able to pick that and Blood Season up pretty cheap on Amazon or eBay.

I enjoyed this, I don't really like fiction books when I read a book it's usually a biography or an autobiography. This is about that guy who trapped his arm in a cave and had to cut it off to get out.

I'll take a look at those, but have Dickie Bird's already.

Re: Recommend me a non *f sports book.

Fatty Batter is an autobiographical acount of a guy's love of cricket. It's pretty funny and is definitely worth a read.
