Beautiful Bitters
As part of my ongoing reinvention of myself, not only am I a fan of small furry animals, loved-up, less cynical and indeed a moisturising gayer, but I have also decided to cross ... to the other side.
Nope, I won't be slipping PaddyBerger a quick one up the marmite motorway (even if he begs), but I will however be eschewing my beloved Red Stripe in favour of bitter. I have just procured an array of said drinks to get me started tonight, namely Black Sheep Ale, Ridleys Old Bob, Combined Harvest and Fursty Ferret Ale, and am looking to the gentlefolk of the GF to point me in the direction of further ales that I should be investigating. So I ask - which are Britain's beautiful bitters that I should be quaffing? |

Re: Beautiful Bitters
I love bitter/ale I does. never touched lager until I moved out to Germany.
Tim Taylors and Theakstons are readily available in many boozers and are a decent mainstream option. Do not touch - Cains, Vaux, Stones, Trophy - all deeply shit. Boddingtons is OK as is Tetleys. I don't like bitter out of cans or bottles, so my advice would be to find a proper old style boozer that still gets a decent array of guest beers.

Indeed...as Noos says, Theakstons is a very nice pint...as is Kilkennys.

Re: Beautiful Bitters
Bitter is so much superior to lager in mostly every way. Possibly the exception being a scorching hot day in a beer garden

Re: Beautiful Bitters
You cannot beat a good (and I must stress the word good) pint of Tetley's. A good pint of Tetley's is nectar. Many years ago the best one used to be at a pub called Jacobs Well in Bradford. Its probably crap now. Theakston's good too, as is Timothy Taylors.
A bad pint of any bitter, but in particular Tetley's, is foul. Its a shame really, but as pubs become crapper and part of big chains, its harder and harder to get a decent pint of bitter.

Sharps, Harveys and the one I had round in the Bell the other night are all Ace. I will get the name of it later if I can.

Re: Beautiful Bitters
There used to be a boozer in Manchester I frequented called the Lass O'Gowry, which brewed it's own ale in the cellar, which you could see by means of a glass conservatory type thing in the middle of the pub. It's ale was ace, and it's worth a visit if you're ever out that neck o t'woods.

Bad/watery lager is vile stuff but its dependant on the brand mainly. But bad bitter is near undrinkable. Like spoiled wine.
