Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

Which is more important? Apologies for all these techy Q's but I trust you lot more than the con merchants who work at PC World.

Got my eye on two laptops,

One has 2GB Memory and 120GB Hard Drive or the one with 1GB memory and 160GB?

Thanks in advance, im getting it tomorrow some time so hopefully someone in the know responds!

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

Depends what you want mate, the more memory you have the more complex operations you can run, programs (and better games!)

But a bigger hard drive would come in handy if you do loads of video editing and need to store pics and music etc.

I would say get the one with the 2GB of RAM. An external HDD will cheaply solve any future storage problems.

What are the full specs of the two machines?

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

Go for the 2GB ram and check if it's upgradeable. If you need more hard drive space you can get an external, the ram is a different story.

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

What 'e said, external HDDs are cheap as chips nowadays if you need shitloads of storage.

What models anyway, and do you know how many memory slots (if they have more than one at all) they have?

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

Its for storage of photo's (take loads), Footie manager (new one each year) and Uni stuff like my essays and stuff, surfing online aswell.

Nothing more complex than that.

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

Looks like a trade off between processor and graphics to me. I'm no expert so I'll leave it to the lads that know.

I'd go for the 2GB machine myself.

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

the 2gb with 120gb hdd is the better machine. However since its an advent its shit and likely to overheat only 3 months after you get the fucker. Acer are a bit better.

Get the Acer and add and extra 1gb of ram. Contrary to what PC world will probably say it will only probably cost £40-50 for another gb. Need to know though if the memory in the laptop is a single stick or two 512mb sticks of RAM.

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

Shop around fella, you will find better machines cheaper if you take a little time. It's a while since I was laptop shopping and you'll be pushed to find something Vista free. Senor Meat may have some good suggestions.

Good point on the Advent thing. Advent is Esperanto for PC world brand name.

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

The Acer, even though the CPU core speed is slightly slower will benefit from the faster memory/front side bus. Intel C2D's *love* high FSBs.

The Acer also has the advantage of not being an Advent. Advent are made by ECS, manufacturers of the cheapoist mainboards in existence. Ask anyone who builds PCs if they like ECS motherboards, for example...

Finally, it appears the Acer has 2 memory slots, standard 200 pin SO-DIMM DDR2, so easy enough to stick some extra ram in, assuming it is currently fitted with a single 1Gb stick as it comes.

Re: Memory or Hard Drive capacity?

Even though PC World and Currys are the same company, I noticed today that the same laptop was £50 cheaper on the Currys website than it was on the PC World website.

So it's even worth checking next door, so to speak.
