Listening to the radio
According to this article:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,2155225,00.html radio is booming in popularity in this country with the advent of digital technology and the internet. It makes some interesting points about how much more risk-taking it is than television, despite remaining popular. It made me realise how much I've started to listen again over the last few years. For music, as I've bored you all about on countless previous occasions, I listen to Worldwide with Gilles Peterson on Radio 1 and Deviation with Benji B on 1Xtra, both of which are specialist shows playing stuff that you can't find anywhere else. However, Radio 4 is ace for dipping into on the journey to and from work and Radio 6's The Basement show is really good. So, are you a big listener, and if so, what can you recommend?

Re: Listening to the radio
XFM Manchester is ace for music. Clint Boon's show of an evening rules.
I listen to Five Live for football, purely because the commentators are a million miles better than the amateurs on TV these days.

I like Classical.
Radio has never been the same since Mark & Lard.

No. Every single DJ is an inane wanker who loves the sound of his own voice. There hasn't been a good one since John Peel. I just stick CDs on when I'm in the car.
Actually, although I hate the station with a passion, Radio City's football coverage is decent.

Five Live (always on in the car on the way in and on the way home from work) and Radio 6 almost make the licence fee value for money.

In terms of your second point, I cannot abide commercial local radio. I hate the "DJ" voices they all have and even worse are th incessant adverts.

Re: Listening to the radio
Only for my own tastes, mate. However, that's partly what this thread is about. If I can't offer something, there'll be loads of others who can. What are you into?

Re: Listening to the radio
Anything really. I quite enjoy listening to topical debate and I wouldn't mind finding a station which primarily focuses on new music of all genres.

Re: Listening to the radio
I listen to it quite a bit when I'm in the van, which is quite often. I tend to listen to Moyles in the morning and if I'm out and about in the day I can live with bits of daytime Radio1 (even the music can be shite and repetetive). I usually really enjoy Zane Lowe's show and also find loads of little gems on shows like Colin Murray & Annie Mac on Radio1 and John Kennedy and Clint Boon on Xfm Manchester (I think Kennedy's show is put out nationally on Xfm).
I realised that my radio listening dropped off dramatically when I had a hire van with a CD player in it though.

Re: Listening to the radio
6 music is my perfect radio station: No adverts, great music 24-7 and DJ's who (mostly) have actually contributed to music and thus know a thing or two. Some of the *pirate* stations transmitting out of Chapeltown are a nice surprise now and again.

Re: Listening to the radio
Check out Radio 1 on the net, then. There's an index of all the specialist shows which seem to cover a broad spectrum of genres.

Re: Listening to the radio
5 live into work (excpet in the Mersey Tunnel) - love Nicki Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty. Chris Evans on Radio 2 to come home to (Johnnie Walker before that).
Flick onto Radio 4 now and again or even City or Smooth FM if something crap on my usual preferred choices. Could probably live without a telly but not without a radio. |

Re: Listening to the radio
Five Live and Radio One mostly. Zane Lowe's show is good for hearing new stuff although his voice can grate after a while.

Re: Listening to the radio
I listen the the radio when I am putting my make-up on in the morning. We have the radio on all day at work. I have Viking FM at home and Lincs FM at work. I absolutely loathe Radio 1, especially Chris Moyles. I just want to kill him. I need background noise, I just cannot work in silence.
