Betting - someone explain something to me

Felipe Massa was evens on one betting site to finish on the podium yesterday at Silverstone.

He was 2/1 to finish outside the podium on another betting site.

Is it right that if I stuck the same sum of money on both outcomes that I would either get my money back if he finished in the top three but doubled my money if he finished outside?

I have no concept of betting really. If I stuck £600 on at 2/1, what is my total return? Is it £1200 or £1800 (this including my £600 stake?)

All confusing for someone who doesn't bet. Saw this on another site.

If you bob 600 quid on at 2/1 you will get 1800 back (1200 profit plus your original stake back).

Re: Betting - someone explain something to me

yeah, so if you'd put 600 quid on both bets - total outlay £1200:
Massa finishes on the podium at evens - get £1200 back - breaks even
Massa finishes outside the podium at 2-1 get £1800 back - £600 profit

If you've got a massive wedge and plenty of time to chase the odds you can make a fair bit on these free bets.

Nice one. The way I'm seeing it is that this may only be possible where there are only two possible outcomes in a sporting event i.e finish on podium or not.

Any ideas as to what sports this type of betting works for?

Sometimes find it with the boxing and football outcomes if your willing to trawl the various betting sites, my mate works fixing/changing the odds in Stoke and he reckons it's the obscure sports where people tend to make more as the research into them isn't as extensive, also betting on corners/free-kicks & throw-ins is big business too.

What if someone doesn't finish the race? Which also is possible in F1.
