A man who skied nearly 200ft down the longest escalator on the London Underground has been condemned by police and transport officials.

He launched himself down the 196ft (60m) escalator at Angel Tube station and filmed the stunt.

The unidentified man then posted it on the YouTube video sharing website where it has received more than 100,000 hits.

Transport for London (TfL) urged police to take the "strongest possible action" against any similar offenders.

'Reckless' stunt

A TfL spokesman said: "This is a dangerous, stupid and irresponsible act that could have resulted in serious injury or death to not only the individual concerned, but other passengers."

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman described the skier's antics as "naive and reckless".

They urged the man to contact them so they could discuss the potential dangers of his stunt.

A BTP spokesman said the video was thought to have been recorded about a year ago.

He said under by-laws they could not prosecute after six months had lapsed.

If someone had been injured, they would still have powers to prosecute under criminal law, the spokesman said.

The video, filmed from the skier's head-mounted camera, shows him walking, going up the escalator, fitting his skis on and launching himself down at high speed.

The escalator was clear at the time but passengers on opposite conveyors can be seen looking on, bemused.

The film's producer said other people were not in danger as friends of the stuntman, a Norwegian national, had warned passengers away.

Somehow I don't think he will be contacting the police! Was a good stunt, and if friends stopped people coming up the escalator then at least there was a degree of preparation.

Had it ended differently for the skier it could have become a film for one of those Darwin awards.

True Story this

Me and the missus were going up the escalators from the tube station at Waterloo the other week and some guy hurled himself down HEADFIRST the metal ramp between the opposing escaladers. I don’t he realized there were metal boards coming out of it every meter or so though.

Looked and sounded VERY painful as he hit each one going down and if he didn’t break a rib or two it would have been a miracle

Seriously, have a look at what he hit face first next time you are at a tube station, very painful……………..the nutter (it was a saturday night, probably bladderd)

Hurling yourself down a tube escalator, wether on skis', head first or whatever, is all part and parcel of a day out in London, surely ?

Next time you get to Euston and go on the underground instead of taking the escalator, ride the middle (a la the GUY JNP is on about), you might rip your jeans or just hurt your but, but its a must do before you die......

Not really something that's an everyday thing, but I'm not a londoner......it might be a ritual they have though...........

I think you'd be more likely to rip your butt, than rip your jeans.

That was mad. I was wondering what would happen when he got to the bottom and the angle as the escalator meets the floor.

The things between the escalators that JNP is talking about, can be clearly seen in that video. Presumably put there to stop people doing exactly that. I suppose you have to be well and truly bladdered to forget about them.

I happend to be looking at the top of the escalators day-dreaming probably about giant underground rats or what I was having for tea...anyway thats not important.
I'll never forget the look on this guys face when he suddenly appeared over the top, it went from 'yippppeee' to 'Ohhh holly mother of god!!!'

I tried not to laugh, held it in for a sec or two and then couldn't stop from laughing any longer

No not everyday, like I said on a day out in London, something you must do once in a while.

You must have surfed the middle bit once ?

I must admit its been about ten years since I did it, and I dont think there were so many of those things then, but if you get enough speed up you can just bump over them !!!
