Re: The GF book thread
Just finished reading a book on the history of The Jam called 'Sounds From The Street'. It was an ok read but there was nothing really new in it for the hardcore Jam fan as a significant part of it was just common knowledge. I didn't really like the format of the book either but it killed a couple of hours if nothing else.
Reading 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' at the minute. Only 40 pages in but it seems decent enough so far.

Re: The GF book thread
Finished The Damned United. Absolutely superb reading, and so accurate in tone that I read the whole thing in Clough's voice. Which, actually, was pretty irritating. Am going to go straight back to GB84 (which I started reading a few years back); he's a talented blighter is David Peace.

Just reading The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein.
Already I can tell it's going to turn me into even more of an angry young man.

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
Its a bit of a self help book I think but I thought it was great. I didnt even read all of it but it was really helpful. Its the kind of book you'll either find brilliant or a total waste of time.

Anyone else into Don DeLillo? I've been re-reading White Noise, and yup, it still rocks.

I read White Noise while in college and really enjoyed it. Started reading Underworld but never really got into it. May go back and give it another go.

Absolutely loved The Cold Six Thousand, it's a wonderful piece of writing and I was completely blown away by it. I'm not great with words, I don't always have the greatest means of explaining the way I react or feel about something and reading the work of somebody so talented is an absolute joy. I'm pretty sure it took me longer to read than any other book I've ever read but it was worth it.
I then quickly read through Speaker For The Dead which I again loved and I'm half way through Xenocide. A very different pair of novels to the first one I think although the tales of morality are pretty strong in both. I love the imagery that this creates in my head of the alien species and of the future, books like this are exactly why I love the genre. I fully intend to read the whole series now, although I've still got a lot of the Discworld series to finish off at some point. Just planning out my holiday reading, think I'll be finished with Xenocide sometime next week and will then be looking at picking up Black Man and taking The Silmarillion away with me along with White Jazz and The Black Dahlia by Ellroy.

Re: The GF book thread
Green River Rising by Tim Willocks was a great read. It's like the HBO show Oz in book form as it deals with a prison riot and the fall out from it. It's pacey, well written and the characters are reasonably believable. A good read.
I'm now about half way through Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King, which is fucking great.

Just started to re-read The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. Wonderful novel if you enjoy Gibson, Morgan and the like.
Synopsis
A nanotechnologist, John Hackworth, breaks the moral code of his tribe, the neo-Victorians. He has made an illict copy of a device called "A Young Lady's Primer". Its purpose is to raise and educate a girl capable of thinking for herself, but Hackworth's copy has fallen into the wrong hands.

Elmore Leonard writes some good stuff. I also enjoy most stuff by Nelson De Mille. An Innocent Man ( non fiction) by John Grisham is pretty scary.
