I read that book a couple of years ago, I thought it was really good. It felt like I got two books for the price of one!

I've just ordered:
Alan Hansen, A Matter of Opinion
Steven Gerrard, My Autobiography
Roy Evans, Ghost on the Wall

I know Gerrards book got good reviews but what are the Hansen and Evans books like?

The Enemies Of Rome by Philip Matyszak.

Attila, Hannibal, Boudicca and the rest. A book about everyone who ever kicked the shit out of the Roman Army.

I'm just over half way through. It's grim as fuck but I agree with those who say it's brilliant. (Unless it's got a Disney ending, in which case I'll use it as 300 sheets of bog roll.)

Before that, I'd just re-read Mark Steel's Reasons to Be Cheerful, which I'd recommend to everybody, without exception.

Re: The GF book thread

just finished reading A thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Kosseini (he of The Kite Runner) brilliant book even though its very mainstream at the moment, also nearing the end of The Book thief by Markus Zusak, the format this book is written in is brilliant (told from the point of view of 'death' during the second world war, strange but works very well), a must read i have to say.

Just sent off a new Amazon order:

Destination Morgue - James Ellroy
California Fire and Life - Don Winslow
Swag - Elmore Leonard
The Dead Zone - Stephen King
The Drawing of the Three - Stephen King
Green River Rising - Tim Willocks
The drawing of the three was where `The Dark Tower` series comes into it`s own for me, an excellant read.

Green River rising is absolutely brilliant as I recall. Very graphic, I wouldn`t want to get sent down in the States. Another book on a similar theme I`d definately recommend is `Dirty white boys` by Stepen Hunter. It`s even better than Green River.

I used to read extremely profusely, we're talking thousands of books. Can't remember the last time I read a book. Sucks cock.

Paulo Coelho

I have just got back from staying in a hostel in Krakow and Paulo Coelho;s name came up as there were a few Brazillians staying there.

I am faintly aware of Eleven Minutes and The Alchemist.

So which of his books are worth reading

Re: The GF book thread

Having seen and read The Commitments years ago, I decided to read the remainder of the Barrytown Trilogy by Roddy Doyle. The Snapper and The Van.

I have to say whilst The Van seems to get the better reviews I preferred the darker subject matter and therefore humour of The Snapper.

I also read Floodlit Dreams by Ian Ridley, the story of a year as chairman at Weymouth FC. Not a bad little *f type book; but found his snivelling a little too much at times.

I think I need to move onto some meatier subjects; as most of my reading requires little thought of late.

With Brian Keenan's passing yesterday, can I recommend An Evil Cradling? It's about his time in captivity with John McCarthy. Great book.

Hope this hasn't been mentioned already. 43 Years With the Same Bird; A Liverpudlian Love Affair by Brian Reade is out in early July. I enjoy reading Reade's stuff and this book sounds really good so I'll definitely be buying it when it's released.
