Re: What book are you currently reading?

I didn't close my brackets after mentioning Weller. Soz.

Can only find The Stand as well. Was convinced I had more left than just that.

The reviews for Salem's Lot are pretty compelling, but I have to confess to being a horror tart - I actually don't like the feeling of being creeped out. I might give it a go with my next set of purchases. Is there anything else like Different Seasons or The Green Mile, both of which I loved?
You seem to be after the well-crafted-story King rather than the horror King so you might want to give Lisey's Story or (especially) Dolores Claiborne a try.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is also a nice (but short) read.

The Dark Tower series is his best stuff but I know you weren't that impressed by The Gunslinger. The series just gets better and better (Wizard and Glass being the exception as it's a bit too far-fetched).

Cheers, Andrew. I haven't forgotten what you said about TDT getting better and I may well try book two this summer. Cheers on the other recommendations, too. You're right - that is what I'm after.

On the King stuff, I read Lisey's Story and found it quite disappointing.

Hearts in Atlantis, another relatively recent novel, has some cracking sections on the protaganist's college years and Vietnam. The supernatural factor is there but complements what's a great story already.

The main problem I find with his writing now is that some of it (like Lisey's Story) feels very formulaic if you've read a lot of his work already.

Opinions, eh?

I liked Hearts too but it is difficult recommending just one or two from what is a great collection of writing.

Books

Any ideas?

Would like a couple of page-turners.

Re: Books

I often recommend Jim "Dimestore Dostoevsky" Thompson to people I don't know. Most people tend to like his books. The Killer Inside Me is an old classic. Very exciting, very raw and well-written.

Give him a google.

Re: Books

Also, John Fante is an excellent - mostly unheard of - author, who wrote some stunning novels 'bout US living hell in the 20s. Ask The Dust is my favorite.

Must also mention Cormac McCarthys works - actually better then the movies they made out of 'em (Blood Meridian is excellent western noir).

Finally, Bukowski if you haven't already given him a thought; quick and funny read. Factotum, Ham on Rye or Women.

No worries mate. I've given it a new title too as I always forget what it's called.
