Things can only get better is a laugh out loud read I reckon for anyone that lived through and remembers that period.
Actually, it is a must-read for SD if he hasn't read it already.

They're probably referenced a few times earlier in this thread, but it always comes back to American Tabloid and The Cold Six Thousand by James Ellroy for me.
If you like recent history, consiparacy theories and brilliantly written fiction, you should give these a go. To label them just crime fiction sells them short.
Anything by Paul Auster I have to complete in a few hours too. Very easy to read but mind frazzling in the best way possible. Leviathon, Timbuktu and the New York Trilogy are among the best, though anything he turns his pen to is great.
Stephen King's best stuff as that can't-put-it-down factor in spades too.

Re: What book are you currently reading?
Just started (Christ, I need some new books) re-reading Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency and The Long, Dark Teatime of the Soul by Douglas Adams.
Class. I suppose I'll have to read the Hitchikers Guide again after these two...

Brilliant books right there Meat. Adams rules. Tomorrow in the unlikely event that I remember I am going to start a best author thread obviously with some limiting qualifying criteria. Can someone remind me please if I forget? Think you.

FSM damn it.
I was reading this, then I left it at the missus' parents' house last night. Her mum is devoutly Christian (and Dad quietly so) and that I've left it lying around may be a problem. Together with the missus turning to Buddhism I think she might think we're bullying god.
Instead I am reading Wyrd Sisters.
