Re: Book recommendation

I've just read Kieth Allens Autobiography which is called "Grow Up" and I can recommend it. Top read. I finished it in just over a week because I really couldn't put it down.

Redemption by Stanley ''Tookie'' Williams, the founder of the Crips gang. Definitely the best book i've read, basically it tells his life story and it's a very interesting read.

He's the bloke who was completely reformed in jail that Arnie could have saved from the death penalty, but didn't, right?

Yeah he is. He was one of the founding member's of the Crips. He was sentenced to death over an armed robbery that left (I think) two people dead. He always maintained his innocence and there wasn't any evidence linking him to the murder. He reformed in prison and worked his bollocks off to stop kids joining street gangs and was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize one year. All this from his jail cell. Sadly he was executed by lethal injection. I didn't know he had an autobiography out. May have to purchase it.

Yeah, that's him. It's amazing how much he changed from being a total scumbag to doing great work helping kids etc. It is a great read and if you see a copy of it you should definitely get it. I bought mine in Virgin Megastore for about €8 only a few weeks ago.

It's worth reading if only for the bit about the automatic stone-thrower which (apparently) can be used for throwing sweets!

Re: Book recommendation

Five Families by Selwyn Raab.

An exhaustive, illustrated hardback detailing every aspect of New York's Mafia construction, members and policies.

Trails all of the 5 borgatas from the Prohibition-era Black Hand,Charlie Luciano and Bugsy Siegel right up to post-Gotti and Sopranos-cliched reformations including future projected Captains and Bosses.

Essential, if only its atmospheric 1920s glitz, 60s Downtown bustle to 80s industrial Brooklyn grit.

Finished it this morning. Gutted not to have Frankie Machine in my life anymore! It's a brilliant novel about a 'retired' mob guy who suddenly has loads of people after him, and it tells the story of him trying to piece together why. It's aching to be made into a probably sub par film..

Re: What book are you currently reading?

Just finished Terrorist by John Updike, a yarn about a young Muslim kid in New Jersey being groomed for a major bomb attack.

Impressive, reads like a literary thriller.

D-Day by Stephen Ambrose. Amazing stuff. Very detailed but it puts you in the thick of it.

Dark Sun - The making of the Hydrogen Bomb by Richard Rhodes. A nice mix of history, politics, intregue and science written in his usual readably style.
