Re: What book are you currently reading?

Currently reading a book titled This Book Will Save Your Life by some bint called A.M Holmes. Its about some fella who thinks hes losing his marbles, actually a very good read and I've been blitzing a good portion of it each night.

The author was strongly recomended by Stephen King so I knew before purchasing it I was onto a winner.

It's also really good in the way it takes the current global political climate and extrapolates it out to a very believable future. Amazon it, mate; you won't regret it.
Update for Karl: it was fucking ace.

Re: What book are you currently reading?

Just back from holidays, got through the following:

A Prayer for Owen Meany - John Irving - cracking yarn, sorry when I finished it

Windup Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami - surreal genius, but very readable

Enduring Love - Ian McEwan - good, but no Atonement

Obligatory football reads:

On The Brink - Paul McGrath - foster homes, alcoholism, nervous breakdowns, suicide attempts, family break ups. Tough and moving stuff.

My Father and Other Working Class Football Heroes - Gary Imlach - a son's looks into his father's football career from the 1950s when players were little more than slaves.

Both Mrs Paul and a mate of mine rave about his stuff. I tried to give this a go many years ago, but couldn't get into it. Fancy trying to pitch it to me and win me over? I need some summer reads and we've got this sitting on our bookshelves. And if you can be arsed, tell me why Ian McEwan is so good. He's another one I really struggle to believe the hype about (although I've never got more than a few pages in to his books).

Youu'll be needing some light reading after that. Good book though it is it gets pretty heavy towards the end.

You should certainly give it a go, I haven't enjoyed a book as much in a few years.

It's the lifestory of Owen Meany, who is unnaturally short and his larynx is unique in that he sounds as if he is always screaming - any quotes from him are in BLOCK CAPITALS throughout the book to emphasise this.

It's told through the eyes of his best friend, now middle aged, the mother of whom Owen accidentally kills with a baseball early in the book. Strange and/or terrible/wonderful things always seem to happen around Owen throughout his life.

There are strong themes related to organised religion and fate throughout the book, flashing between present day (late 1980s) and the 1950s and 1960s when the two grew up in New England. Irving is fairly scathing in the 'present' voice of Reagan's actions in Central America and the Oliver North affair, so it's even more apt now with the chaos America continues to cause in other parts of the world.

There's also a lot about the Vietnam War and the Kennedy assasination in the flashbacks.

For me, it achieves a rare balance between being literary but not at the expense of readability or story.

So back to my request: can anyone sell me John Irvine and Ian McEwan as authors? What's so ace about their stuff?

I've given a case for Irving (or Owen Meany at least) a few posts back. Just realised I like McEwan for the same reason, they're both storytellers first and foremost, but the books are also rich in literary value.

Atonement and Owen Meany are substantial enough in length to be great holiday reads too.

Re: Read anything good recently?

Just used this and the other thread to put in a summer reading order to Amazon. I'm going for this little lot:

The Dark Tower: Gunslinger - Stephen King
The Long Firm - Jake Arnott
Hombre - Elmore Leonard
The Winter King - Bernard Cornwell
Speaker for the Dead - Orson Scott Card
The Power of the Dog - Don Winslow
