Online fraud - please help/advise!!!

After pottering about on here for half an hour or so this morning, I checked my e-mails to discover that my paypal account has been stung for five different transactions in US dollars totalling £1247.67. The cheeky fucker has even e-mailed me with some official looking thing saying payment accepted from this address: kris_sadler_ebay@hotmail.co.uk.

I have cancelled my card with the bank and contacted paypal. I've also changed my e-bay details (although I've now realised that it's not e-bay, but some twat with "e-bay" in his e-mail address).

Basically, there are some serious IT/internet brains on here and I'd like to solicit some advice/help in both putting this right and making sure it never happens again. Do I need to do anything else to make myself secure & recover stolen funds?

Feeling fucking sick and some help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation,

Paul.

Re: Online fraud - please help/advise!!!

Did you have 1200 in you paypal account - if so your stuffed.

If its paypal transactions that have then taken the money from your credit card to fund them - then mostlikely the credit card company will cancel them. You need to do a chargeback. It takes ages.

I had some one with a cloned amex card of my account that went to a spending spree in Hugo Boss, Cegil Gee and a hifi shop. Nearly £3k. And amex claim the whole lot each month.

After ages all transactions were cancelled.

The weidest thing the guy took some clothes back and they refunded to the card..... Bet thats not what he wanted.

Paul said he cancelled his card so I'd assume that the transactions took place via his credit/debit card to paypal. I'm sorry to hear about this mate.

It's a fuckin disgrace mate and I'm really sorry to hear it.

Without knowing the ins or outs Paul, have you replied to any e-mails which say something along the lines of "Please enter your ebay/paypal details or your account will be closed" or "Due to technical problems you are required to forward all usernames/passwords to paypal etc?"

The e-mails are very well constructed and look like the pucker thing. I've had hundreds in the past year or so, I always forward then to spoof@ebay.co.uk or spoof@paypal.co.uk, they then tell you if it's genuine. None of mine have been mate.

Sounds like you've done what you can for now changed passwords, cancelled cards etc. As for the money mate ask Paypal if you are covered from online fraud. Do you use your current account for paypal or is it credit card? If it's a credit card then you have no worries.

PM Bri (Joeyb) as this happened to him not so long ago.

Hope this helps.

Re: Online fraud - please help/advise!!!

I had nothing in my paypal account - I charge it to my debit card. However, it's deffo not a hoax as paypal and the bank can both see the transactions. On the fake paypal stuff, I apparently had a block on my account a few months ago due to a security threat and had to change some of my details. Could all of that have been spoof?

That sounds like whats happened mate, fucking cunts they are.

I know that if someone gets your card details and uses it to pay for transactions in shops and such then the bank will nearly always refund you the money back (this happened to me, i didnt have my card stolen but must have had the details cloned somehow). I dont know whether this applys online aswell though.

Re: Online fraud - please help/advise!!!

paul defo do not charge anything off the internet back to your debit card as that's your cash and your account, charge it to a credit card.

i had my current account wiped out last year by someone in thailand and a fake airline ticket company. cleared it in 2 days with shit loads of transactions under 100 quid, luckily i got it all back

I concur, that sounds like the method they used to get your details (phishing little cunts). But you will be ok, the credit card issuer will refund the money no probs.

Couple of resources, first one is an M$ column to prevent phishing:

Clickme1

Second one is a sort of quiz, where you see a load of emails then have to guess whether genuine or not. Not easy:

Clickme2

Re: Online fraud - please help/advise!!!

Paul,

Is there any chance that you could have clicked in a "fake" Paypal e-mail and put some details?

Like I said, I get loads of fuckin fraud e-mails from banks I don't even have accounts with and Paypal.

Never click into them.

Like JoeyB said, I had this happen to me about a year ago and was shitting myself because I thought I got stung for £1000+, but I actually wasn't.

I almost never use a credit card because I hate the slippery slope of spending cash that isn't mine and thinking I've got more than I have when checking my current account balance. However, I think might now have to do this.

On liability, both the bank and paypal seemed to intimate that I'd get the money back. I fucking hope so because we've got three and a half grand from our holiday oustanding on an interest free credit card that needs paying and we'll be struggling big time if we're £1250 out of pocket. We had the money to pay it, but were just playing an interest-gathering game during the interest free period.

This is so fucking shit it's untrue. I fucking hate thieves of any kind - especially these faceless fuckers. Scumbag fucking cunts, the lot of them.

Re: Online fraud - please help/advise!!!

Paul, Don't know who you bank with, but its not actually that big a deal with most banks.

If their fraud systems did not pick up the transaction (which I assume are unusual) I'd consider changing banks. They will likely charge the transactions to a suspense account. Although they may remain on your account for a week or so, most banks will give you a temporary overdraft up to the amount of the transactions until they are removed.

Just had a look at that now. I guess the answer is to never use the links in an e-mail, but to go to the relevant website by typing the URL into my the address line of IE.

Re: Online fraud - please help/advise!!!

Banks think that the new chip an pin system with cards will reduce/prevent fraud. In fact they have made it easier for fraudsters. I know someone who recently went down for a few years for a few million quid. He was telling me that from the far east you can buy some sort of adapter that fits into the pin terminal where you enter your pin. It remembers everything from your card number to your pin. They then clone the card, change the name on the card if they wish and then enter your pin and will rinse your card as much as they can. The guy used to pay people at petrol stations/retail outlets to place this device into the terminal. Fucking wanker I know. Just as an added precaution I pay experian for their online credit reference access. For 20 odd quid a year its worth just checking to see that no-one has applied/taken out finance agreements on your name.
