Re: Two minute silence
Anyone, if they wish to, should be allowed to mourn the passing of someone. I live 20 miles outside of London, and travel through there quite a bit. Could easily have been me, friends or family. Stu has buggered this up a bit, but I can see where he's coming from.
I've posted this before, but we need to realise who the real culprits are.

Re: Two minute silence
Secton 31 - spot on.
Stu - I know you don't support any bombers but sometimes your condemnation appears to be reserved solely for the West who may (or may not depending on your point of view) have triggered the whole mess rather than for the guys who actually do the blowing up.

I think that is probably because we see enough content in the media telling us how bad the bombers are and there seems very little condemnation for the other, better dressed, murderers.
Good post by Section 31 too.

Re: Two minute silence
There is a bigger question to be answered here:
Whilst I am in favour of marking such anniversaries with a respectful silence, what happened to the one minute silence? What are the lines that need to be crossed to deem it a two minute silence event? How long before we get a three minute silence??
God help us when the ten minuter comes along!!
I wonder if emergency services categorise situations by the length of the silence that will follow.
1) More than ten innocents die - 2 mins
2) Less than ten - 1 min
3) 1 national hero dies - a minute of applause
4) Some fag gets his nob stuck in the hoover - a minutes laughing
In twenty years time we will all be sat in silence between atrocities, reflecting on previous atrocities.
By the way, agree with silences or not - you should keep your fuckin gob shut for the duration out of respect for those that do. No question.

What about exactly ten?
Do we have a minute and a half?

Re: Two minute silence
If you count ten and there is nobody to pull in, you will die knowing that you slipped through the system and will never be remembered.
When in a tragedy type situation it's best to have a quick count. If the headcount is nine, grab a couple of folk on the fridge just to make sure you make the 2 min silence.
I think the minute and a half is used when tradegy strikes the set of Time Bandits.

It's as simple as this, it's put out as a mark of respect, if you don't want to observe it, don't, if you do....crack on...
People did die, innocent people and thats the focal point, nothing else...

Re: Two minute silence
I see where Stu's coming from, although I observed the 2 minutes silence and was happy to do so. But when I observed it, I wasn't just contemplating the bombings of one year ago, I was thinking about ALL the victims of this stupid and senseless conflict on both sides.
I think that's the best approach to take here. I'd agree the 2 minutes silence is a cynical and manipulative way for the government to try and make us take their side in the "war on terror" (emotional blackmail) but they can't influence who or what we choose to honour with our silence. You need to make the silence personal to you and not let yourself be influenced by what the government tells you to think.

Re: Two minute silence
PM's questions today:
"Will the Prime Minister join me in calling for a cesation to the hatred and intolerance some people have been peddling with regards to the inclusion of beans on a fry up?"

Re: Two minute silence
I am against the Iraq War although feel the likes of the people who bombed London a year ago use this as an excuse to cover their actions.
Look at the people who have just been arrested for trying to carry out a similar attack in Canada when Canada is against the Iraq War. Whats their excuse there.
The likes of the people who carried out the bombs in Iraq, Madrid, Bali etc will find any excuse to justify their actions.
They just hate our way of life at the end of the day.
