Ace free software thread
I don't mean pirate copies of stuff, I mean proper free software that is just ace. I'll start off with the fantastic ripping software DVD Shrink. It was recommended to me by a mate a bit back. You can rip copies of your DVDs or any that you borrow. You can remove all the languages you don't need and the annoying trailers/pirating warnings at the start as well.
Easy to use and hase NEVER been beaten by any coding or anti copying shite. Free as a bird too.
DVD Shrink

You're a star dude - I've been looking for something like this for a while - peeps keep telling me I'm going to have to buy some expensive bit of kit.
If you're a sad hi-fi geek like myself and you're after a way to rip top quality MP3s try here
Ubernet - its got links to all the free sotware and how to set it up - pisses over all most MP3 ripping progs, and labels all the tracks etc.

GIMP is the GNU equivalent of Adobe Photoshop.

Ah. I have photoshop through work, but I will remember that if ever I need to have a free program to replace it if I don't work for the place I work at in the future. On another computer. If you get my drift.

I get you. I never bothered using Photoshop, I find Photoshop Elements to be more than satisfactory for my use. I got that one for free when I bought my digital camera.
Just to throw another program into the mix, you can get free anti-virus from Grisoft. This is something they have done for years, so it's not a campaign to get you hooked and then charge you later:
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Re: Ace free software thread
Software is boring because I don't understand it.
You are all boring because you seem to know plenty about it.
These are the facts as I see them.

My GIMP doesn't do that. My GIMP does everything I tell it to do, and likes to have apples inserted in it's mouth*

What he said.
Having said that, could any of you technical bores answer this query, please: how can I copy a mix CD I've burned myself with indexed tracks on without inserting a pause at each index? I've got a master of a mix I did, but when I copy it there are little breaks in the music - which defeats the whole object of a mix. I believe there is a solution to this, but I haven't got it. Any bedroom boffins out there who can help?

Re: Ace free software thread
in the preferences they'll be an option where you can reove the gap between each track. It'll default to like 2 secs or something, you just deselct this to no gap

If you're using media player to burn your CDs, you could try this
