City swoop for Barry

Quote:
CHESTER CITY have made Yeovil midfielder Anthony Barry their first summer signing.

However, City’s protracted pursuit of Vauxhall striker Paul Taylor looks to have ended.

The clubs agreed a fee for the player last month, but a City spokesman has indicated that certain demands from the player’s agent mean the deal is now unlikely to happen.

Chester boss Simon Davies said: “Anthony is a great addition to our squad.

“It is a big plus for us to sign him. I am a big fan of 4-3-3 and Anthony will fit into that system extremely well, he is a good passer and will run all day.

“He has a good footballing pedigree, and his experience in League One with Yeovil Town will rub off onto the younger players in our squad.”

The 22-year-old Liverpudlian, who has signed a two year contract with City, started his career with Everton as a trainee, before spells with Coventry and Accrington Stanley. Barry played 74 times and scored once in two and a half years at Yeovil, and appearances and scored one goal.

Davies is to hold talks with former Accrington Stanley duo of David Mannix and Jay Harris on Monday, while City were hoping to sign ex-Bradford midfielder Eddie Johnson today.

l Chester will face Welsh Premier League club The New Saints in a behind-closed-doors friendly on July 8 at Oswestry.
