Rafa after Ulrich Ramé?

Benítez targets French keeper

Andy Hunter
The Guardian,
Wednesday May 21 2008

Rafael Benítez has identified Bordeaux's Ulrich Ramé as his next summer recruit, providing the former France international goalkeeper can be tempted to understudy Jose Reina at Liverpool. Ramé, who turns 36 in September, has enjoyed a fine season as Bordeaux's first-choice keeper and helped Laurent Blanc's team secure Champions League qualification as runners-up to Lyon, but will be offered a more lucrative two-year contract at Anfield.

The current Liverpool reserve keeper, Charles Itandje, who made seven first-team appearances last season, has been offered to Bordeaux as part of the deal but Benítez has received no indication from Ramé as yet that he is prepared to leave France.

The Liverpool manager, who hopes to solve his problem at left-back by signing Udinese's £8m-rated Andrea Dossena, secured his first signing of the summer yesterday when the club confirmed Swiss right-back Philipp Degen will join on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund when his contract expires on July 1. "He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality," said Benítez of the 25-year-old. "His strength is going forward and I am confident he will prove to be a quality addition to our squad."

Re: Rafa after Ulrich Ramé?

Be a good choice, although I would like steve harper as our number two, I think hes a great keeper and if hes prepared to mainly bench warm at newcastle then surely he would come here.

I would prefer an English back up keeper as well. If something happened to Pep, we need a decent keeper to come in. Always risky bringing in an overseas keeper, whatever his experience.

steve harper is on a free, much better than someone who's never played in the premiership

What makes you think Rafa hasn't tried?
If they don't want to come theres nothing he can do about it.

Re: Rafa after Ulrich Ramé?

Rafa interested according to The Echo with Itandje going the other way.

Good signing in my opinion. Experienced Internation goalkeeper who is not going to be moaning about been on the bench and hopefully he can help the younger keepers in the reserves.

Re: Rafa after Ulrich Ramé?

Why would he leave Bordeux who he's played for, for years and who are back in the champions league and who are going well under Blanc to sit on our bench. I just cant see it personally.

Harper is'nt on a free by the way.

Any deal involving shitandje leaving is an amazing deal. Its up there with getting rid of Josemi.

Fair play to him. He virtually admits in that story that he isn't good enough, I respect people like that.

Re: Rafa after Ulrich Ramé?

An experienced Keeper with Premiership experience would be ideal, but as keepers seem to play on and on these days, finding one who is prepared to accept being 2nd choice, (but will still fight for his place and give his all if selected), will be difficult.

I'm shite in goal. Can I replace Shitanje, do you think? (like for like)

Good bloke. I don't like the headline though. It wasn't a snub, he just said he didn't want to. How is that a snub?
