Re: The Damned United
I read it last year and was blown away by it. Brilliantly written, and a really powerful exploration of the mania that must surely exist within all 'driven' people, whether in sport or whatever field of life.
The fact that it was about a real person, and a series of real situations (loosely, at least) is kind of irrelevant. And I thought that the comments in the South Bank Show about what kind of man Clough really was or really was not, missed the point. It is a piece of fiction, and, as such, can only be judged on those terms.
It is a book about what motivates (regret and revenge, mostly), what drives people to extremes, the divisions (and lack of) between a public and a private life, and the fact that life is riven with contradictions, has a lot of pain, and moments of 'glory' that make it all worthwhile.
The fact that it is 'about' Brian Clough is possibly the least interesting thing about it.

And a few years later:
"I had said that many Liverpool fans were drunk and they killed their own.
"That was my honest opinion at the time, but I now accept the investigations have made me realise I was misinformed.
"I wasn't trying to be vindictive or unsympathetic, but my opinion has altered over the years. It was never my intention to hurt anyone."
"I'm sure the grieving families don't need me to fan the flames again, but I would like to express my regret at the hurt I may have caused"
Brian Clough - probably the only time in his life that he held up his hands, admitted he was wrong about something and apologised.
Great book by the way, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in football. Really innovative in the way it blends biographical information with the storyline. Pretty much all of the events in the book happened, but the author invents dialogue and joins the dots to make a brilliant semi-fictional story.

Re: The Damned United
Despite my earlier point about the irrelevance of the book being about Clough, I did enjoy the revelation/speculation behind why he always wore a green sweat-shirt. Peace describes a scene whereby Clough discovers that Revie thought the colour green was a bad omen, and henceforth made a point of wearing it on match days.

^^^ Peace was wrong , it was in relation to Shilton becoming billy-big bollocks.
What did he actually say on the show?

Re: The Damned United
ive just read the first 100 odd pages after meaning to pick it up for a while.
really intrigueing thus far.
people will always have their opinions on clough but he was a fascinating character and even from what i remember of clough and what ive seen in interviews of him, i feel peace has really tapped into certain elements of his personality really well.
i think this style of writing on factual events is rewarding as by taking a certain amount of artistic license it stirs the imagination of the reader.
true history of the kelly gang was done on the same premise.
hopefully, the film version will be made with the same atmosphere.
colm meaney is uncannily similar to revie, gonna have to give him a hair piece as ive never seen him without his familiar ginger curls.

We need a mod to sort it out.I'm going away for the summer so i'd love to get some footie books on the go for when Im on the train. As for Colm Meaney he does look like Revie! I always wonder how the great managers got on with each other, I know Shanks was a mate of Busby but I wonder what he thought of Clough, Stein, Revie

We're talking about a book, and a very good one at that, so if you haven't got anything constructive about the book then fuck off out the thread.

Re: The Damned United
I'm reading it slow, I'm tempted to finish it off but I like dipping in and then out. Its engrossing stuff.
I'm getting some more of Peace's books for my inter-rail. I hope GB 84 is just as good.

Just arrived from Amazon a couple of days ago. Bought on the back of this thread so it'd better be good.

Re: The Damned United
For what it's worth didn't Clough apologise for his remarks?
Will look out for the book, cheers Paul.

He did, yes.
"That was my honest opinion at the time, but I now accept the investigations have made me realise I was misinformed.
"I wasn't trying to be vindictive or unsympathetic, but my opinion has altered over the years. It was never my intention to hurt anyone."
"I'm sure the grieving families don't need me to fan the flames again, but I would like to express my regret at the hurt I may have caused," he added.
It takes a bigger man to apologise etc. His remarks were foolish and hurtful but he was a stubborn old cunt who formed an opinion too quickly.
I have more respect for him than Ferguson. Sorry if that doesnt sit well with others. The game misses him still.

Re: The Damned United
Meaney starring in football film
06/04/2008 - 13:37:06
Colm Meaney is playing legendary English football boss Don Revie in director Tom Hooper's 'The Damned United'.
The film covers the story of football legend, Brian Clough, who had a brief spell as boss of Leeds United.
Cloughie is played by Michael Sheen, his assistant Peter Taylor by Timothy Spall and Jim Broadbent plays the chairman of Derby County.
