The Damned United

David Peace, who wrote the excellent The Damned United about Brian Clough's 44 days at Leeds United, is on The South Bank Show tomorrow night. It's about his novel, Johnny Giles suing him for using him as a fictional character in a real setting and also about Clough and football writing in general. Get on it, kids.

Was - he's dead. Whatever you think of Clough, the book (and also the story of his time there) is great as a football fan.

I've just started reading this book, I've had it for a couple of years but started reading it now as I'm off work.

I'll watch that, didnt realise it had created a stirr. Good read so far.

It's very dark. Clough is painted as a raving, alcoholic nut job in it.

OK, can we just take as a given that Brian Clough is a cunt? Then the rest of us can discuss a programme on telly without constant interjections about him.

Hes come across so far as a nutter, I think I'm just short of 100 pages in.

Do you know if he actually attacked Revies office with an axe?

No-one is disputing that he was a cunt - as I said above. Here we go: "Brian Clough is a cunt". Can I now banter about a good book and the TV show made by its author about the furore it caused?

You can get it for less that £4 on amazon marketplace.

We need a Liverpool Way football related book club.

Re: The Damned United

I've read GB 84 by Peace, which is a brilliant novel about the miner's strike. The Damned United is definitely next on the list.

Rather more bizarrely, King Kenny and Marina are on 'Mr and Mrs' tonight on ITV. I guess it's for charity. All the same...

Re: The Damned United

I Read the book last year, and although I hate Clough as much as anyone, the subject matter and character studies are excellent. No wonder Giles is pissed off no one comes out of the book sounding particular well (well maybe Roy McFarland is the exception) Its a book that will stay with you long after putting it down. I would say a definate must read and look forward to seeing Michael Sheen as Clough.

Re: The Damned United

The other (factual) book on Clough - Duncan Hamilton's 'Provided You Don't Kiss Me' - is similarly fascinating. Written by Forest's equivalent of Bascombe, it's sometimes weirdly weak on acknowledging LFC's success during Forest's heyday, but some of the stories about Clough's descent into alcoholism are amazing. I knew the man was often struggling in the latter seasons, but Hamilton recalls days when Clough would sit in his office and discuss with his dog when the first whisky should be drunk! He seems to have been out of it when Forest was in the FA Cup Final, and then the directors - who knew how pissed he was - let him carry on for a crazy length of time before one of them finally snapped. Maybe more pertinently, the account of Clough's change in attitude once his assistent Peter Taylor had gone is very intriguing.
