I wondered that too especially given the revelation that Rafa had spoke to O'Neill in private a month ago. For MON to then come out with I know nothing just makes him look like a tit.

Yes, so can I. It's because his captain's had his head turned by the thought of a move to a club with a phenomenal pedigree and he's bricking it at the thought of the fan backlash.

All of which is fair enough but when he starts saying that "Rafa doesn't respect anything" he can fuck right off for me. It's that stupid comment about the £2m valuation that really got me, that's deep in Father Dougal territory.

"I don't want this in the press" says O'Neill. To a journalist. Yeah whatever.

In view of your oft-noted expertise on the subject of insanity Nick, I'll take that as a compliment ;-) O'Neill's comments are farcical whichever way you dress it up.

Re: Martin Oneill

I usually like O'Neill but he is being a cheeky bastard.

He, not Rafa, was the first one to start this public discussion/argument.
Rafa said nothing about it until O'Neill started acting the victim.

Yes, the bid was first made known [publically] in a local newspaper but I've got news for you Martin, that's football. And what's that necessarily got to do with Rafa? As RoboRiise queried, what has Rafa to gain from the bid being made public?

Perhaps Rafa could have chosed not to respond to O'Neill's virtually unprovoked attack, but I don't blame him for defending himself - I am glad he has.

Re: Martin Oneill

And all those saying the timing of the bid was inappropriate, do you honestly think that we are the only club and Barry is the only player to have been involved in transfer talks these last few weeks?

Give me a break.

But even that isn't true, Rafa has spoken privately to MON long before that "20 days ago", which is long before it turned up in the echo.

I'm not sure on the details, but I heard that he basically felt Liverpool officials were trying to make him look a cunt, so he left the directors box.

Whether he had good reason for that or not I don't know, but he wasn't going down to the bench to manage the reserve side.
No wonder he was pissed off - he clearly doesn't need our help with that.

As for O'Neill trying to keep his side focussed on the battle for fifth with all this attention on his captain's future, maybe he should give Rafa a call back and ask how he managed to win the Champion's League in 2005...

Re: Martin Oneill

This would be nothing but speculation, paper talk, or the idle thoughts of bored journalist, but what has O'Neill done? He's gone out and given the rumor, which is what it is no matter how credible the source , the credibility of truth. He wants this story out there. As far as I'm aware, there were no quotes from our club in any publication suggesting we had interest before O'Neill came out with his first tantrum.

Re: Martin Oneill

I'm assuming from Dave's comments in the other thread (which I've only just seen) that the club did leak this to the local press. I'm curious about two things here; was it Rafa himself or other elements and if it was Rafa, why?

I'm sure it was going in the paper regardless of whether the club fronted the story though.

I like O'Neill, i've a lot of time for him. I don't really see what he's doing wrong. He's trying to the best fro his club. Whether that be disrupt the proposed transfer so we give up and move on or get the best price possible for his captain.

Oh fuck me! O'Neill in "Trots out pseudo-intellectual credentials" shocker.

I realise that spending two years of your life studying the works of Thomas Hardy is bound to inflict some kind of emotional damage but don't go waving that in my face and asking for sympathy Martin.

You're a bit of a twat aren't you.

Childish comments just because I have some form of apathy for a manager who is more than likely going to have his best player 'poached' from him.

Don't know about you but I still remember how shit it felt when Gerrard was on the verge of leaving in the summers of 04 and 05.

I personnlly would welcome the signing of Barry buti 'm not completely blind and cold hearted to realise what a kick in the teeth it would be for O'Neill and Villa fans. At the end of the day if it improves us then great, ideally the deal could have been handles better (by both sides) but thats is unfortunately the nature of modern day football business.
