I shouldn't really be surprised, but I must admit this did shock me a bit.......

“We have tried to come to an agreement with the player and his agent, but that has not been possible,” Benitez said. “Kewell will leave the club at the end of his contract.”

Kewell scored 11 goals in his first season, before Benitez took over in 2004, but a horror run of injuries, including serious groin, knee, thigh, ankle and foot problems devastated his stay. He only scored five goals in the next four years, playing just 18 games in the past two seasons.

Kewell’s agent Bernie Mandic said there were a number of options being considered.
“I’m in talks with several clubs but at this stage I’m playing my cards close to my chest,” Mandic said. “Harry’s never been happier or fitter.”

I reckon Rafas tried to save Harry a bit of face by saying hes tried to offer him a contrract. Its kindof saying he can still play at a high level. People may think "hmmm, well if hes good enough for liverpool still, he could be great for us". Rafa knew Kewells time was over, harry knew it too.

Its a real pity as he could have been a real great player for us kewell.

Kewell in his day at Leeds, around 2001/2002, was one hell of a player. The season when Leeds made the semi finals of the champions league, he was their star man. If i recall correctly, Lazio had a bid of 25million rejected by Leeds for him, obviously before all the finances went tits up. When we signed him, the mancs, chelsea, barcelona and Inter where all in for him. IMO he was up there with the best for a few years at Leeds

Harry asked how he was suppose to keep his family on just £200,000 for 2 years

lad i know said that kewell only produced about 5 good games a year (when at leeds). we didn't even get 5 games a year(ish), nevermind good ones.
