Same here. Pepe, Cassilas and Buffon are the best 3 keepers in the world IMO. Cech is very good but not as steady as he was in his first 2 seasons

The dipshits of RedCafe still think that VDS is a different class to him. Why I wind myself up having a look on there I dont know.

Re: Pepe Reina - Golden Gloves again.

Well, apparently the stats show that we conceded the fewest shots on target of any team in the league this season, and Van Der Sar made the most saves from goalbound shots of any goalkeeper in the league.

Huh? Run that past me one more time? What's the difference between:
"we conceded the fewest shots on target of any team in the league"
and
"Van Der Sar made the most saves from goalbound shots"

Unless "we" refers to the mancs.

Re: Pepe Reina - Golden Gloves again.

No it means VDS has saved more shots on target but has still conceded more than reina. Reina has conceded less but had less shots to save.

eg. reina saves 100 shots and concedes 10, van der saar saves 150 shots but concedes 15 goals.

Re: Pepe Reina - Golden Gloves again.

Well then like all these things there are damned lies and statistics. I'm not trying to be deliberately confused here, but how on earth are these things measured then?

If Reina conceded 16 goals from 16 shots on target, is that better or worse than VDS conceding 15 goals from 15 shots on target? And whilst I think about it, how are goals measured? Does JAR's wonderfully-timed header count? What about Fat Frank's deflections? They're almost NEVER on target.

AND, right, surely all goals are on target. I mean you can't save a goal or else it it wouldn't be one. So isn't it better to just count saves? To elaborate; If Reina saves 100 shots and concedes 10, isn't that just 90 saves? And the amount of saves has as much to do with the defending as it does the goalkeeper.

Golden gloves? Load of old bollocks.

Re: Pepe Reina - Golden Gloves again.

I agree with you mate I was just trying to explain what he said then. Surely the golden glove is based only on clean sheets? Anyways this proves yet again that reina is the best keeper in the prem/world.

A phenomenal achievement to win the award for 3 seasons on the trot. Iron out one or two small weaknesses and he will be truely world class, imo, up there with Clemence and Banks etc.

The points is that he doesn't have much to do, and when he does he's not as good as other goalkeepers in the league.

Fucking hell imagine how many clean sheets we'd get with a decent goalie then.

I think if we don't get 37 clean sheets next season then Rafa should be sacked and Reina traded in for James.

Re: Pepe Reina - Golden Gloves again.

The stats don't tell you that Reina prevents plenty of shots from coming in with his reading of the game and speed off the line.

Re: Pepe Reina - Golden Gloves again.

Again, not saying he's not good, just that he's not as good as many people on here make out. He's had the most clean sheets but he's also had to deal with the least shots on target, and hasn't done as well with the shots he HAS had to deal with as other 'keepers in the league.

Well I'm sorry angel-tits, I repeat (for the last time) there's damned lies and statistics. It's clearly absurd to say "he's not as good as other goalkeepers in the league when he clearly is. Statistics tell one side of the story, the other side is less tangible and includes all sorts of strengths including positioning, judging the right time to come out of the goalmouth, the sense of calm instilled amongst defenders, how crap they are at properly decking Arjen Robben, etc. etc.

Fuck me, goalkeepers are now going to be judged on how much they have to do? So if we totally dominate a game and Pepe makes just two awesome saves, it's not as good as another keeper whose team plays shite and their keeper saves a load of weak cruddy attempts on goal?

Sorry. I'll concede bias towards Pepe, but I swear I wouldn't trade him for any other keeper.
