Benítez quashes Alonso rumours

Sky Sports | Football | Premier League | Liverpool | Benitez rubbishes Alonso rumours

Rafa Benítez says he will not be looking to sell Xabi Alonso if Gareth Barry arrives at Anfield this summer.

The future of midfielder Alonso has been thrown into doubt after Benitez recently revealed he was keen to secure the signature of Aston Villa captain Barry.

Juventus have become the latest club to be linked with a move for Alonso, who joined Liverpool from Real Sociedad for £10.5million in 2004, while Real Madrid and Barcelona are also thought to be admirers.

However, Benitez has rubbished speculation that he is looking to offload the Spanish international.

"(Alonso) is our player, he has a contract," Benitez said in The Independent.

"Barry can play in three different positions, so I don't think we need to worry about this."

As much as I want Xabi to stay, this really means nothing. For all we know Xabi really wants to leave, and Rafa is ensuring we get what he's worth.

Rafa's words there are far from definitive, the most interesting thing about that is that he's referring to Barry as a Liverpool player already.

I've just read little bits about his wife wanting to raise the kid in spain etc. Could be bullshit, we really don't know shit do we? We've had him come one the bastion of journalistic integrity LFC.tv and proclaiming he wants to stay.

True enough that Conor, but the inference is certainly that he regards Barry as part of his plans for next season, and with what Rafa said in the press yesterday about "O'Neil, he knows my idea and he has to speak to his owners" suggests that O'Neil is just playing public games to soften the blow for the fans of their Captain leaving....make out Liverpool are the baddies etc. The bottom line is that he actually wants to come here, and they are resigned to selling and are trying to put the best spin on it.

Why not? It's not like Ashley Cole has been in the form of his life since he joined Chelsea.

Rumour has it (read it on another forum from people 'in the know' nudge nudge wink wink) that we had the option of signing Barry, Quaresma or Nasri and chose Barry because he was more versatile.

Think we got it spot on personally.....

Re: Benítez quashes Alonso rumours

I have loads of rumours about xabi being off but that is all they are I suppose. As 05 says that statement means nothing. If for whatever reason he wants off we have to try and get the best price.
I thought that Barry was a straight replacement but who knows, time will tell.

Milan didn't say that did he? he said "For all we know Xabi really wants to leave" and not "we know Xabi really wants to leave", with the implication being that there is most likely to be plenty of stuff going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

I'm sorry but no matter who says it I simply refuse to believe that Benitez has quashed Alonso.

If true then Rafa is not fit to manage this football club

However I dont believe we would sign Barry and not sell Alonso when its so obvious we need to spend our money on quality wide players.

I am not going to let this specualtion upset me but I will be very upset if Rafa fucks up in the transfer market this summer

Re: Benítez quashes Alonso rumours

Of course Rafa's gonna say he wants to keep him, that way he can commond a decent price for him. He's trying to do the same with Crouch the only difference being Crouch one has 1 year left on his contract, Alonso has 3.

Thing is though Nick, you won't know if he's fucked up or not until the end of next season at least.

I would hate for alonso to return to his awesome first season form elsewhere because make no mistake alonso at his best is world class but we can't wait for forever to him to discover his class.
