He fucking wont, we'd have to win it by a massive points difference and playing the best football the world has ever seen. Even then we'd have to sustain it over 4-5 years for him to, begrudgingly, congratulate the manager.

Style over substance every time.

So Joe Fagan is considered but Rafa wouldn't be at present?

It was just that you said "only by winning that (the League) does a liverpool manager truly join the pantheon of past liverpool managers" and because Rafa hadn't I assumed you didn't consider Rafa to be on the list..

We're in agreement though as I would rate them both as "Greats" for LFC...

imho winning the CL makes you a great, look at manu they have only won it twice in their history, barca with truly great players in their past have only won it twice in their history (one of those CL won by rijkaard).

Disagree with the sentiment. Joe Fagan was a brilliant manager for us, the 1st treble anyone had ever done in this country.

Both will be considered greats but Rafa has to win the league to join the upper group and overtake people.

Also for the record, Guardiola is the new manager, he's not interim, he's the new manager.

Re: Rijkaard Sacked.

The day this club run with its finger on the trigger is the day it dies.

Managers need time, end of story.

Barca should remember that and they might of won more than there measly two european cups.

No need to point that out.. EVERYONE knew that expect you know who... who now has "contacts" within Barca and DIC...

Also on the Joe Fagan issue, I think you might have misread what I was asking.. I'm in agreement, Joe Fagan is and should always be remembered as a Liverpool Great, just as Rafa should be when he finally moves on/retires...

Re: Rijkaard Sacked.

He lost control of his team towards the end of last year - he had players basically taking the piss out of him. He had one way of playing, and if it didnt work, he was fucked. That was how we knocked them out of the Champions League, it was how United made them look shite the other week. Using the amount of players going through a divorce is not an excuse - its symptomatic of the 'partying' culture that he has allowed to exist under his tenure - why do you think so many have marital problems ? He never had the bollocks to do anything about it and has always defended his players - making himself look weak and naive - Roy Evans anyone ?

The fact that everytime he gets knocked out of a competition by a so-called 'inferior' footballing side he rambles on about long balls and physicallity is bluff, designed to pander to the self appointed guardians of the beautiful game, their support seem to have set themselves up as (along with Arsenal).

Re: Rijkaard Sacked.

Rash, I think each case should be taken on it's own merrits. You're obviously comparing the situation at Liverpool to the one at Barcelona but I think both situations are completely different. In my eyes Barca have gone backwards and would continue to go backwards as long as Rijkaard stayed there. I think we however, are progressing and improving so it would be detrimental to get rid of Benitez.

I do rate Rijkaard as a coach though, and I think he will go on to further success in his next job. AC Milan should go for him, as I think he'd do a really good job there.

If you read between the lines in his opening line "Double La Liga and Champions League manager sacked. Standards are high at Barcelona." What it really reads is

"We're fucking shite under Benitiz, he's spent Net/Gross more than any other manger in the world put together, the style of football is crap and why the fuck should we back him even though we know the club is skint, but I still don't understand why we can't go out and buy 2 world class wingers for £25m each... what the fuck has having no money got to do with it.. Did I mention that he's spent Net/Gross more than anyone else EVER.. If I didn't let me do that now.. He's spent Net/Gross more than Slur or any other manager in Europe.. anyway, my contacts at Barca, DIC, and at the Telegraph have confirmed that Rijkaard will gracing the hallowed technical area of Anfield next season and Benitez will be replacing Pep Guardiola who is just an interim appointment, even though the worlds media have today announced that he will be the full time first team coach.. but what do they know.. I'm telling you that he's an interim appointment and will be replaced by Benitez.... I can't confirm this though as it's not one of my normal sources but Messi may follow Rijkaard to Anfield....."

Re: Rijkaard Sacked.

Rijkaard will bounce back and get another job elsewhere. I suspect then we will see his true mettle. It's hard to judge how good his is/isn't given the resources at his disposal at Barca.

As for what any of this has to do with Rafa is anyone's guess! I'm glad we have our manager and the sniping/comparison is immaterial. If we do like comparing, let us compare with Martin Jol's Tottenham. They were a very good Prem outfit, with two 5th place finishes under their belts. Cue board interference, and see the whole thing fall apart.

Rafa had us coming in third for the past two seasons. Cue board interference and we finish fourth with a CL semi final thrown in.

Who knows how things might have regressed should Rafa (quite justifiably) decided to go elsewhere earlier in the season when his bosses proved to be incompetent?

I'm glad we have our man, and even though I wavered earlier in the season (and shame on me for jumping the gun) I am 100% behind Rafa and eager to see what next season brings.

Re: Rijkaard Sacked.

I find it a little disturbing how hypocritical people are. It's astonishing.

Lets look at the facts:

Barcelona had not won a trophy since 1999 when Rijkaard took over. He has won 2 La Liga titles and 1 Champions League in 4 years. For those who speak about spending money, he hasn't spent as much in comparison to Chelsea, United, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Madrid. So why is it that a manager with that level of success at a stagnating club when he took over be sacked and people on here say "he hasn't done well, he needed to go"... even this season of utter turmoil he has had a season similar to ours. So either their standards are higher than ours, or our fans are more patient - but it can't be the latter as many of you are saying Rijkaard should go.

Ian Sea - how can you have a go at his team for going backwards? He won La Liga and the CL - how does he go forward? A period like that is sometimes followed by some years of decline due to complacency. We won the CL in 2005 but not a sniff of the league and no CL since then - have we gone backwards? In fact we have gone from 5th to 3rd twice and now 4th - have we gone backwards? The logic is pathetic and immature not to mention totally two faced.

A little consistency wouldn't go a miss, which makes me think that people on here just chat the shit they chat to try and fit in with the mob when it comes to our own club. He has played good football - Tick, He has bought through young players - Tick, He has won the league Tick, He has won the CL - Tick, He has spent less than his rival in Madrid, Manchester, Chelsea etc - Tick... but he is a shite manager? Right, please give me the logic in that cos I don't get it.

As for those having a go at him because he moans about long ball teams - where are you lot hiding when Rafa moans non stop about Bolton?

The hypocrisy as not even a joke anymore... wake up and grow up or have some balls to speak your mind.

Re: Rijkaard Sacked.

Why is this still being discussed. Rijkaard will go, Guardiola will come in. Maybe Barca will do well, maybe they wont. The time was right for Rijkaard to leave Barca. Maybe Pep will try and sign Xabi, maybe he wont.

End of.

Any half decent manager could have brought through some of the young players they have had during his reign.

Not quoting the Rantshid... but you've got to admire how he passionately defends a manager of a team he doesn't even support (allegedly)..

Personally, I couldn't give fuck who is in charge or who is getting sacked at another club. All that concerns me is LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB.

Re: Rijkaard Sacked.

It is still being discussed because people are hypocrites when assessing how a manager has done and whether he deserves to be sacked. There is no consistency or even a half baked attempt at fairness. The usuall clowns are out in force trying to twist the knife into me for asking a simple questions which are as yet not answered.

Why does Rijkaard deserve the sack?

Plus: Have they had a worse season than us? Have they spent less than us for the past 4 years? And have they had less success than us for the past 4 years?

If the answer to the last 3 questions is no... then why are people saying he deserves to go?
