Championship - Zidane set for QPR job?
Eurosport - Sun, 04 May 09:53:00 2008

Speculation is mounting that Zinedine Zidane will be sensationally appointed as Queens Park Rangers manager on Sunday.

The France legend has not held a full-time job since retiring from football after the 2006 World Cup final, has no formal coaching experience and does not speak English.

QPR owner Flavio Briatore has promised a major announcement before the final game of the season against West Bromwich Albion, and Sunday's People newspaper claims Zidane's appointment will be announced.

Club captain Gareth Ainsworth has written in his programme notes: "Sunday promises to be a day every QPR fan, old and young, remembers for the rest of their lives."

The former Bordeaux, Juventus and Real Madrid man would replace Italian Luigi De Canio.

Zidane is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest players of all time. He won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship with France, and is a three-time FIFA World Player of the Year.

His playing career ended under a cloud when he was sent off for a headbutt on Italy's Marco Materazzi during the final of Germany 2006, which the Azzurri went on to win on penalties.

Despite Briatore's extensive contacts in France through his tenure as Renault F1 team boss, the appointment would cause widespread astonishment throughout football.

And the big news was...

A new club crest unveiled before the match. Of course, those Sunday papers never make anything up, do they?

Re: Zidane set for QPR job?

Gareth Ainsworth, QPR Club Captain, said: "We got to see the crest for the first time a few weeks ago, and I really like it. It has a traditional feel to it, and it's nice that they've managed to incorporate the blue and white hoops. After all, they're synonymous with QPR

Aye, fuck, that must have been tricky.
