Try again.
Are you being deliberately thick? Messi and Dos Santos were found by a Sporting Director and signed up as kids.

I have said this before and I will say it again. Messi, Ronaldhino, Et'o, Henry, Dos Santos and Krkic cost about the same as Kuyt, Torres, Babel, Benayoun, Pennant and Crouch.

One lot was bought in by a Sporting Director and the other by a manager/coach.

well i'm sure the fact Barca had already bought whizz kids like Ronaldinho for 30 odd million helped! Rafa came in and had to buy a whole new fecking skwaad!

Oh Rashid, you so craaazy
Why did Rafa have to buy a squad? He chose to do that... and many of the players today e.g. Benayoun, Kuyt, Voronin etc are not much better than the ones they replaced.

Rijkaard inherited a team in far more dissaray than even Liverpool were. Revisionism stinks on here.

Re: Modric...

Barcelona are a fantastic team. As an attacking unit they are perhaps the best in the world (though one might have a case by saying 'too many cooks spoil the broth' and all that).

Anyhow, Barcelona are excellent: nobody disputes that. In fact, they almost knocked us out of the CL last year, but fortunately we prevailed.

Ronaldinho cost 21 million the season before rafa arrived, they finished 2nd that season...the team rafa inherited was filled with the likes of Cheyrou and they just scraped 4th place. Their best player had also decided to leave the club for a pittance...Rafa had to build a whole new squad...whatever you are smoking, please give me some guv

Rafa didn't have to build a whole new squad, he chose to. He could have kept some players as they were clearly not any worse then the ones he bought in.

Why have you listed the shite?

I am not convinced Crouch is better than Baros, or if Kuyt is better than Cisse yet. I am not convinced Voronin is better than Pongolle. Is Istandje better than Kirkland? And if so are that lot tens of millions better?

Was Josemi better than Finnan? How good is Nunez? Was Pelligrino better than Henchoz?

All I am saying is that many of the players we had didn't need to be sold and new ones bought in, he chose to do that.

Re: Modric...

Risky signing to me, huge money for a talent, he's not complete by any means and he could struggle, of course he could be a huge hit but no way he he worth that, way too much money.

Re: Modric...

A good thread ruined by petty argument.... for a change. Rashid loves to argue such unnecessary points.

I for one am gutted - I've seen him play at length in the Croatian League and he really is fucking brilliant. I understand their leauge is the equivalent of League One, but I think he's too good for Spurs and a real gem.

Re: Modric...

If they play him in Jenas' current position it will prove an excellent signing, but if they play him in Malbranque's he won't look like he's worth 20m.

my thoughts exactly, and cheers for getting the thread back on track!
I'm sick of reading about net spends and sporting directors!
Modric looks a good player from the little I've seen of him but over priced

Ah you get used to stupid arguments where some people are involved.
The lad looks great on the ball but i think he could be massivley overrated as he'll be a marked man next season, this year was his surprise year and if he's going to be this top top player they hope he is then we'll find out alot next season.

True, but in reality every player you sign is a risk. Ask yourself this: Would you be disappointed if the headline said, 'Rafa scoops Croatia star Modric'?

Ah yeah i'd be happy as he's an exciting prospect but for that amount of money i'd think its a risk, the 20million spent on Torres wasn't a risk at all as he has done it in Spain but Modric is still unproven to me.
