Emlyn's statue

A statue of former England and Liverpool football captain Emlyn Hughes is being unveiled in his birthplace of Barrow, Cumbria.

The defender, who became a TV personality after retirement, died in 2004 from brain cancer, aged 57.

FA chief executive Brian Barwick is set to dedicate the bronze statue - a pose of Hughes in mid-kick - on Friday.

The sculpture will be sited at a new office development on Abbey Road, which has been named Emyln Hughes House.

The former television Question of Sport captain, who was awarded an OBE in 1980, played 650 games for Liverpool, won 62 England caps and captained his country 23 times.

He was named Footballer of the Year in 1977 and also played for Blackpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Hull, Mansfield and Swansea, before a 20-month spell as manager of Rotherham United.

After his playing career he lived in Sheffield.

The statue has been funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

A fitting tribute to a man who will be forever remembered at Anfield.

If only they still had characters in the game like Crazy horse, then the footballing world would be a much better place.

Hopefully when the new ground finally gets built by whoever and we have a walkway of legends, we will also have a statue of Emlyn.

Well in Tommy, waiting for a man's death to cast a slur on him that he can't dispute.

Re: Emlyn's statue

Loved Emelyn, besides the football there was his ace appearances on Qos, and Emlyn Hughes' Team Tactix.

My favourite board game ever.

Re: Emlyn's statue

Couple of great memories of the Mighty Em (in no particular order)

Smashing a goal in at Ipswich then running over to the Liverpool bench with those two clenched fists.
Smashing a similar goal in at Highbury when we nearly always came away with nothing (Im pretty certain it was our first win there that I can remember)
Being dropped from the england squad but a scouting report for the Italian manager in the run up to a world cup qualifier mention the Mighty Em as the best player yet not in england's plans!
Giving David Fairclough a gee up in a game. Just doing his captain's work.

Sadly missed. YNWA
