What is with us and defending set pieces
It's really starting to piss me off how crap we are at defending set pieces. Why are we so weak at defending them? We just always look vulnerable whenever we give away a set piece. Once again today we leak a goal because of a bloody set piece. Rafa seriously needs to sort that out big time as that is our biggest weakness.

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
It's bloody fucking me off how weak we are at defending them. WE just look so vulnerable everytime a set piece comes in. If i was wenger i'd be telling my players to run at liverpool and try and win free kicks all game.

Reina has completely lost confidence in his ability to defend them.

i think we are defending too deep from crosses,we was on top of reina for the goal today ,and also on wednesday,we need to hold a higher line,
rafa will sort it out before tuesday i hope.

Great result for us there today no complaints from me and great to see the young lad get a start in a big game i think he has shown that a couple of the lads are worth a look he didnt look out of place and theay are one of the harder teams he could have made his debut against

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
We have the worst record of defending set pieces in the premier league. 70% of goals against are from set pieces. If we knew how to defend them we would have won the league

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
Last season we had the best record for set pieces. What's happened is that opposition players are standing in one zone and running into another zone on the blind side of the player marking that zone. It's just that people have worked out how to play our marking... no big deal, Rafa will get it right again over the summer.

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
I disagree Rash, most of the goals we've conceded from set pieces have been down to individual errors. Our defence has just been very shaky all round this season, by their own high standards.

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
I do think people are overloading one zone against us at times. It might well be a flaw in the system.

No he hasn't the problem is that he has no support from our defenders. The zonal set piece defence thing has to go. The only thing that works on defending set pieces is 'Italian' marking.

The system accounts for that though, because if there is more than one attacker in a zone the defence is supposed to close in elastically to account for it. I maintain that we haven't been playing the system as well as in previous seasons: we're too static, and don't attack the ball enough at times.

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
Managers who know how to exploit the flaws in zonal marking and have the players capable of doing so will always give us problems from set pieces.

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
It seems to me that, for the first time under Rafa, the defence has been changed on a match by match basis just as much as other areas of the team (more so in fact, over this run of good form with the new system). I said last week that the solidity and positioning of the defensive line is never as great when Carra isn't at centre back. There's a price to be paid for not having your leader and organiser at the heart of things.
So, I think it was inevitable that something which is so dependent on organisation and communication would wobble in that context. We'll be fine once a bit of retuning has been done. Certainly I'd be very surprised if the players weren't aware of it and working hard to resolve it with Rafa in training before Tuesday (and beyond).

Re: What is with us and defending set pieces
Got to agree Paul, the defence is changing a lot as Rafa likes Skrtel but he wants to accomodate Carragher too.
I'd bite the bullet and settle on today's defence for the rest of the season. I just hope Rafa doesn't tinker even more next season when Agger is back. The defence if anything needs to stay consistent.
