Re: do you want us to sign David Bentley?
So Quaresma's going to cost at least £24 million if they rejected an offer of £23 million. Thats probably 3 times what Bentley would cost.
Personally i like Quaresma but hes not 3 times the player Bentley is in terms of goals and assits and hes unproven in the PL while Bentley at least has 2 good seasons in this league.

if the players name doesn't end in 'inho' we should steer well clear

Pennant takes way more stick for his ability than his attitude, Dave. He's slow and never scores.

Re: do you want us to sign David Bentley?
i think rafa said in one of the more recent interviews why he dont play JP nowadays is because Crouch isnt there and both Crouch and him aint suitable for the current formation.

Maybe so, but he still takes stick for his past misdemeanors. He's not slow though. He might not be a sprinter but he isnt a slouch either. The lack of goals is inexcusable however, and it means we're basically having to carry him. You can't have one goal a season from your right winger, when every other club in the top half would be looking for double figures or close to it.

That's the bottom line, isn't it?
I wonder does Rafa's one senior player/two junior players plan for this summer incorporate whatever money we might claw back from Pennant and others. Hopefully not.

Re: do you want us to sign David Bentley?
I have no problem with Pennant's attitude (bar the sending off at Porto (?)) it's purely his ability. I think he's good enough as a squad player actually, just not the first eleven.

So Porto turned down 23m for Quaresma and someone wants us to buy him even tho he'd cost 24m?

In the North London equivalent of the Echo, they reckon Spurs and Manchester United are in for Bentley as well as us. Pure speculation of course, but it would be pretty funny in light of this thread if he went to United.

To be honest Ian, in my experience the footballers who aren't dicks in person are the exception to the rule, our ones included.

Here we go again...
At least you show openly what you really base your view of Pennant on, instead of pretending it to be a judgement of his abilities - like many posters here do.

I really wish he`d score more goals, but he gives a significant contribution to our attacking play every time he is on the pitch, we always look like a more attacking, more creative team with him, and most of our attacks come from his side.
It is, of course, also difficult to score many goals when he very seldom is in the starting line-up.
And anyway: Besides Ronaldo, which right wingers in the league has scored a lot of goals this season?

The highest scorer right winger is Joe Cole, 8, followed by Bentley, 6.
And Assists:
The Providers Team Assists
Cesc Fabregas Arsenal 16
Ashley Young Aston Villa 15
Dimitar Berbatov Tottenham Hotspur 11
Wayne Rooney Manchester United 11
Steven Gerrard Liverpool 10
David Bentley Blackburn Rovers 9

He has scored 11 goals in total in a career that has spanned almost a decade.
Anyone who tries to defend Jeramine Pennant's goal-scoring record is nothing more than a quacking spastic.

He really doesn't, otherwise he'd be starting more games. I'm not going to lay in to Pennant for his attitude because I don't think he's done anything wrong, but to suggest he always makes a significant contribution to our attack is well wide of the mark in my view. Kuyt contributes more from the right hand side than Pennant does, in fact I'd argue that Kuyt has been more effective than Babel in terms of end product since the introduction of 4-2-3-1.

There is no doubt that Joe Cole would have improved our team.
Bentley, on the other hand, is no improvement on Pennant, which makes it meaningless to sign him.
6 goals as a regular starter? His goal tally compared with Pennants will hardly be the difference between 4. place and 1., especially as Pennant seems to be a better overall contributor.
