We need more than just "better".... e.g. Phil Neville is a better full back than Riise. I'd not want him even if he had no United connections. We need world class in this position.

Well hes probably Englands best wide right player so hes hardly a no mark. Only 23 so plenty of scope to improve but hes had 2 good seasons for Blackburn in the PL where hes improved year on year.

A clear improvement on Pennant and Kuyt for that position yes there are probably better players out there that would cost treble what he costs, but if we are working on a budget then surely hes 1 to consider in that 8-10 million range. Who else could we get in that price range to play wide right?

Re: do you want us to sign David Bentley?

fuck it lets buy ribery, diego and ben arfa to play beind torres and have stevie g alongside masch. job done. we'll be bankrupt but fuck it.

P.Neville is nowhere near a better full back than Riise and is fucklng laughable to suggest such a thing. And i don't like Riise.

Your living in a dream world Rashid. You can't just pick and choose which players to buy. Your constant listing of players, whether they are good, special or not is getting laughable. Again. Do you live in a championship manager bubble or something

Re: do you want us to sign David Bentley?

Rashid is right in his basic premise that we need players who will "become" better than the likes of Bentley, we cannot buy top class like Kaka (or can we?) so we need to buy players who will become the next Kaka (or Ronaldo etc) or at least get close to that level.

Bentley essentially isnt anywhere near them and blocks the development of a player who could well get to that level, so we end up with Bentley in the team for a few seasons, yipeee, what does it do for team development? he will keep us 3rd/4th and that's it, then he'll eventually get moved on probably? I dont know, I can't tell the future but he's 24 and i doubt will get any better

then you have players like Fernandez, Nasri or even Ben Arfa who can develop into something better if we're patient enough, the trouble is we tend to make these functional buys and aren't patient enough, the best players grow at their clubs, what will Bentley grow into? he's already hit his level I think...

the problem for Rashid though (and most under pressure managers) is he wants to win stuff now, in that case, functional players like that who come in and can do a job or bridge a gap may help in that regard, might help us attain more points or deliver a trophy, whereas the opposite approach of growing a talented player might leave someone like Rashid and other fans very frustrated for a few years....

team development needs to be taken seriously over a 4/5 year period, that's why I call for talented youngsters from abroad because it means the team develops into something better in the medium to long term, players like Bentley will not be sufficient in my opinion

think about team development for a second... who honestly believes SG will be maurauding around as a 2nd striker at 32/33?!

Just to clarify, I don't think Bentley is shite - he's obviously a good player to be playing at the level he is, but he's relatively shite for what we need, IMO.

Cisse, for example, isn't shite, but when he played for us he was seen as 'shite' because of the level you need to be at to be a success at Liverpool.

I think you know what I mean!
look, some players take the step up like a fish to water.
for instance aldo played for oxford (I think) barnes played for watford.
in spain AM are the eqivilant of spurs and nothing suggest torres was going to be a 20 a season striker for a top team.

Ben Arafa is another one, like Torres has the talent to be world class - that's what we need to look at. Or Ribery who already is world class. Not David Fucking Bentley.... Joe Cole is twice the player Bentley is for example.

YouTube - But Hatem Ben Arfa

Joe Cole is a very talented player, but a lot of the time his shooting is weak and his final ball isn't always the best. Yes he is more skilfull than Bentley and is perhaps a bit more mobile, but his final ball and crossing certainly isn't.

Incorrect.

I want skillful players at the club, we have enough war dogs to win several battles in one day. We need smarter men than some of the ones we have, even if they are young it doesn't matter. I am happy to be patient with the likes of Ben Arfa as they are already at a good level and will get better, what I hate seeing is dead beat players who are simply not good enough now or in the future.

Bentley won't get any better, and he can't do the things we need which is carry the ball, beat a man, take on defences... he is a poors man's Beckham.

No thanks.

what holes? I mentioned talented players who moved to a big club and then exploded. the players I mentioned obiously have more natural talent than bentley but bentley has enough talent to make a succes here.
if rafa moves for him he will certainly have my support.

I think it should be a sackable offence to sign him.

Anyway agree to disagree.

It just strikes me as pretty ironic to be slating a player for being a "Billy Big Bollocks" (or whatever it is you called him) when you've said in the past that Joey Barton's a nice enough lad, and the player Bentley would be replacing is a) the most humungous cock on the face of the earth, and b) a twice convicted drunk driver.

To be honest Ian, in my experience the footballers who aren't dicks in person are the exception to the rule, our ones included.

for the last frigging time we need wide midfielders to score goals, the idea of a flying winger is DEAD DEAD DEAD!!!! you get your fullbacks to provide the width you get your wide mifielders to cut infield and score, or haven't you guys not noticed pennant has disappeared from the face of the earth.
