Gerrard on Lucas
GERRARD TIPS LUCAS TO SHINE
Paul Hassall 02 November 2007 Steven Gerrard has praised the impact of Brazilian Lucas Leiva and is convinced that the midfielder has a great future at Anfield. The Reds skipper played alongside the 20-year-old during the 2-1 victory over Cardiff City on Wednesday and admits he has been highly impressed with how the youngster has adapted to life in England. "He could have had the winner in the derby on his league debut and there aren't many players who can say that," said Gerrard. "It is always difficult for new players to come on in the derby, especially when they're used to playing a different style of football in a different country. But Lucas came on and acquitted himself well. "I've seen enough of him in training and in games to know that he has got a great future. "He is only a young lad but once he picks up more experience and if he keeps on doing the right things in training and listening to the right people, then I'm sure he will go on to be a great player." Lucas' cameo appearances for the Reds so far this season have also delighted boss Rafael Benitez, who revealed that fans can expect to see more and more of the Brazil international as the campaign progresses. Benitez said: "He is the captain of the Brazilian under-21 team and he has already won a cap for the first team, so we knew all about his quality. "It is not as if he was playing for one of the smaller countries. It is Brazil and it is really difficult for a player to play for such a big team at such a young age. "So we were happy to sign him, and I am sure we will see more and more of him as the season goes on." Lucas made the move to Anfield from Gremio during the summer, after his rapid rise to stardom saw him become the youngest player ever to win the Bola de Oura - the award handed out to the best player in the Brazilian championship. The transition from playing in South American football to competing in the Premier League is not an easy one, but Benitez believes there are already signs that Lucas will be a complete success. "Lucas has the quality and mentality to do well. It is different for him in England, even small things like the grass that we play on is different," said Benitez. "But he is adapting well and he has shown in recent games that he is a player of talent and one who can do well in this country. "He could have scored against Everton and it is a pity he didn't because to score the winner in the derby would have been good for him. But he still played an important role in the victory, so that is good. "He is a player who is comfortable in possession, can pass the ball really well, has good movement, is always involved and can get from box to box. "He can remain as a holding midfielder but he also likes to get forward because he scores goals, so he is more of a complete midfielder." http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drill...71102-1215.htm

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
That's good stuff.
I hope he gets to play more often and cements his position as one of our quality central midfield options along with Gerrard, Alonso and Masher. |

Does anyone else read Rafa's quotes in his accent? Or am I just a nutter?

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
I have high hopes for this lad. You dont become Captain of the Brazil u-21 team and win their player of the year award if your shit.
He gave away the ball a few times against Cardiff and conceded a stupid foul and booking which could have been costly but hes still adjusting to the English game and im sure he will get there.

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
So far he doesn't look like a bust. What I like is when he's in the setup he looks like he's been here for a long time. He sometimes shows that coolness Alonso brings and just settles things down, although he has made some rookie mistakes but it's to be expected.. He looks like a player.

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
He's made a promising start and looked good against Cardiff in the week, despite a few mistakes and sloppy passes before he came off. I'm encouraged by him and if the rumours about Momo leaving in January, he'll get more first team oppurtunities.

I do the same but, saying that, I'm certifiable. Have you got hairy palms?

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
Lucas strikes me as being a 'proper' Liverpool player - good touch, passes and moves and has a lot of intelligence.
I've got high hopes for him, although the competition here is fierce. It looks more and more worrying for Momo really - as much as I love him, his passing and general ball skills are not as good as the others, and Mascherano offers a bit more.

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
What us Rafa on about him "remaining" as a holding player, I thought it was decided on here that he was anything but?
I like Lucas and as Brownie says he is a proper Liverpool player, good touch, intelligent, passes simple and keeps the game moving. He can be a great player for us in the future and is already ahead of Momo in my book. |

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
I thought he was really good on Wednesday. I'd like to see him play alongside Gerrard more often.
It's nice to see Gerrard speaking well of him too. |

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
Was it? I've seen plenty of people say he's good defensively and good going forward, That suggests he can play any way in central midfield.

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
I said on a previous thread that Lucas will be world class and a star but I did question if it would be at anfield. The only way I can see him making it at anfield is if we dont sign Mascherano to a long term deal.
Whatever happens Lucas will be a star

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
I think Gerrard, Lucas, Alonso, and Mascherano will give us more than enough options and we'll be able to keep all of them happy, IMO.

Re: Gerrard on Lucas
coop - whilst I like Lucas that's bollox. Medjani was France U21 or U18 captain in their hey day, and Milan Baros was Euro 2004 top score - both have been thrown out of Anfield.
Edit: Did I mention Smicer's amazing international record? |
