Lineker was never booked, I don't think Bobby Charlton was either.

However Cally was a holding CM player for most of his career after being a fantastic winger in his early days

Astonishing. If Rafa had been his manager rotation would have ensured he was still playing for Liverpool until he was.............ooh, 35 or so. I bet he wasn't fit for those important end of season games like the FA and European Cup Final's either.

Re: Ian Callaghan
Hermes mate this is a Cally appreciation thread - I do not care whether Charlton or Lineker were booked or not or anyone else for that matter in the context of this thread.
I watched Cally loads, he was and is a LFC legend on and off the pitch, his sportsmanship was of the highest order always and if you could find it in your brain to utter a word of praise for the great man (which you have failed to do on the thread) instead of sneering or bringing players nothing to do with LFC into it, it would be appreciated. Oh and BTW altho it was harder to be booked in those days almost everyone was, so the person (Thants) who seemed to minimalise the achievement does not know what he is talking about either.
The one booking he did get by the way was in 1978 at the League Cup Final replay V Forest at OT which was an awful night for LFC - we lost 1-0 with a pen given when Thommo brought O'Hare down 2 yards out side the box, Terry Mac had a goal disallowed for handball when it hit his chest and the evening was capped near the end by Callys booking when he won a challenge in midfield, quite honestly it was debateable whether it was even a foul and yet somehow he got a yellow.
Well done Pat Partridge the ref on the night!!

Re: Ian Callaghan
Possibly the most underrated Liverpool player of all time.

I was there the night he was booked, I was pointing out that going a career with one booking was not unique. As for Cally, a great servant but very low down when it comes to a list of our greatest players in terms of talent.

Think its worth remembering he virtually had two careers.Firstly as a right winger in Shanks first great side where he won the 2nd division title;two league titles and an FA Cup.He also played a game in the 66 world cup in that position. He would walk into today's team in that position-or right midfield as it is now.
His second careeer as a central midfielder in Shank's second side and Bob Paisley's he won three more league titles;FA Cup;two UEFA Cups and European Cup.I agree we have had more talented central midfield players. He also got capped again in this position.
In picking the best Liverpool eleven from Shankly onwards I think he would be hard to leave out from the right midfield spot.

Re: Ian Callaghan
I think to sum this all up you just have to see shanklys comments on him.He said he was a real player and he was never dropped. When he was talking about other players coming to see him when they where left out of the side he would say look at ian Callaghan and ask yourself why is he not out?he would have to play an awfull lot of bad games before being out.He also said he never had to say a thing to him all the time he was there do this do that he said i never had to say a wrong word to the boy.Lfc legend.

Why are you trying to undermine his immense contribution to this club's history?
Okay, he may not have had the talent of Kenny or Barnes but you don't get to make 856 appearances (half of which were made during one of our most golden periods) for Liverpool without being a very good footballer and the consumate professional, which he undoubtedly was.
As pointed out, it's a Cally appreciation thread so what's the point in posting negative stuff about him, you'd be better off just keeping it to yourself.

Agreed a truly great man and also a great player
Interestingly John Keith has him as our all time right winger in his all time Liverpool 11 with Billy liddel on the left with the cm being Dalglish and Souness with Owen & rush upfront
