Ryan Babel
Ok, I have to raise this issue because I'm clearly missing the point and I need to have it explained to me. Ryan Babel is one of those players who has been hyped up for ages by journos and FM fans alike. I'll admit that I hadn't seen him play beyond the odd highlight clip before he signed for us and I'll obviously admit that Rafa signed him and knows more about football than me. That said, last night, he repeatedly tackled himself, accidentally walked over the ball, and failed to make tackles (apart from on himself) and simple passes. He puts the effort in and he can run very fast, but I can't see past him being Djibril Cisse with a better work ethic.
Yeah, his goal at Derby was excellent, but then Cisse scored some great goals for us too. I don't want to hear any of that "taking time to bed in" shite either because you don't need to settle into a side to be able to dribble the ball without tripping over it, or make a simple five yard pass. Mascherano couldn't pass for toffee last night either, but we know he's just having an off day.
Is it just me that holds this probably controversial opinion or do other people see it too? I'm sure he's not actually shit, but when is he going to start showing it, at least by getting to grips with the basics.

Re: Ryan Babel
He's very young, and for a while will be as much good as bad. There was one bit of skill last night where he took away from one of their players that was amazing.
I think in a few years he'll be one of our best players.

Re: Ryan Babel
Very good post mate, and I think you have a point - just wait till neil sees this. I think Babel lacks mental toughness a bit like Heskey used to. Now don't shoot me, I think he has all the attributes to be a great player, pace, skill, a great shot and he is built really well - if he had a little bit more confidence he would be excellent for us. I am totally not sure about him as a winger though, he simply doesn't cut it for me there. Time will tell if he is worth £11.5M, Arsene Wenger said in the Standard recently that he didn't go for him after 2 years of trying because the price was way too high.

Re: Ryan Babel
He hasn't been good, at all. The goal against Derby will buy him some time with the more vociferous element of our support, but soon people are going to start whinging, however wrong that is.
If you took last nights game in isolation, he doesn't look like a very good player at all. And most of the other games he's been average with the occasional flash of brilliance. I do see him making it here, but I had to laugh when people began comparing him to John Barnes based on one good dummy and goal. Similarly, we're only five games into a league season, and one genuine match intop Europe, so he's entitled to a decent run before anyone can form a genuine opinion on him.

Re: Ryan Babel
I agree. He is not worth 11 million currently.
Being a cisse with a better work ethic isnt that bad...and kids can develop pretty fast.

I'm not sure it's mental toughness though. He kept plugging away and didn't seem to be letting it get to him, he just seems very clumsy. That bit of skill as someone mentioned above was excellent mind, but I'd rather he could do the basics right because we'd be a better team because of it.

Re: Ryan Babel
I've been impressed so far. I too hadn't seen much of him before we signed him, only in the Under 21 championship in summer but I think he will go on to become a top player. At the moment though he has a clumsy style but he has shown flashes or brilliance as well.
I don't think he'll take long to adapt to the Premiership, as the biggest problem for new signings is the physical side of the game and that is Babel's biggest asset, he is absolutely massive.

Re: Ryan Babel
How can you be impressed with him? He's scored one admittedly excellent goal but his contribution besides that has been underwhelming.
He may well come good, I just don't see it yet.

What do want from him after about 8 games? True he's done good and bad things but as a 20 year old at a new club I've been impressed, and I think there's a lot more to come from him.

NO! Now's the time to do it. He hasn't played up to his transfer fee for the entire first month of the season. Let him burn in the reserves till January when we dispose of him to the first interested party.

Correct. We could always send him on loan to Crewe if that doesn't work.

Re: Ryan Babel
At this moment in time its a mind blowing signing as from what ive seen of him he will never be a winger in a month of sundays (whatever that means), he's a striker or effective in a 4-3-3 where he gets his fair share of chances, he's probably the best finisher at the club.
I think Pako was right on this one and Rafa panicked when he couldnt get any decent wide players for his budget.
unlike some others I think he'll be a good player for us but never as a winger.
