Gerrard out for Sunday?
Gerrard may miss Chelsea match after foot injury
Louise Taylor in the Stade Municipal
Thursday August 16, 2007
The Guardian
Steven Gerrard fears he will miss Liverpool's crucial Premiership match with Chelsea on Sunday and England's friendly against Germany next week after injuring his foot during yesterday's Champions League qualifying tie in the south-west of France.
The midfielder flew back to Merseyside last night with his right foot heavily bandaged having been the victim of a cynical stamp from Toulouse's Achille Emana during the second half.
He was substituted after the incident and immediately headed to the dressing room for ice treatment where he was examined by the Liverpool medical staff.
Even at this early stage of the season Liverpool's league meeting with Chelsea is a match of huge significance and it is one the Anfield manager, Rafael Benítez, will be desperate for Gerrard to play in. The Spaniard said last night it was too early to make a prognosis on Gerrard and that he would await the outcome of x-rays and scans this morning.
But it is thought that Gerrard believes he will not make his club's first home game of the season. He is unable to put a great deal of weight on the foot, although it is not believed to be a broken metatarsal as is the case with Wayne Rooney.

Re: Gerrard out for Sunday?
If Gerrard is to miss Sunday, I hope Rafa goes with Mascherano and Xabi in the middle. None of this Mascherano and Momo nonsense.

Re: Gerrard out for Sunday?
I would have Reina, Carra, Gerrard as the first on the teamsheet for most games if availible, for chelsea games Momo is next.
He eats chelsea midfielders for fun!!!

Exactly. Playing the two together is like sending in a couple of bricklayers to freshen up the flaky bits in the Sistine Chapel.

Re: Gerrard out for Sunday?
I'd prefer Xabi and the Chief if Gerrard's out, but I wasn't 100% convinced Gerrard would have played as a centre-midfield on Sunday anyway. I half-expected him to be used either on the right or even in that just-behind-the-strikers role. If Rafa was thinking that way this could change his plans significantly. If Rafa wasn't thinking that way then it's a blow but not a major blow.

Re: Gerrard out for Sunday?
Bring on the Masch.
Mascherano, Alonso and Sissoko in the middle please. Two hard tacklers and protection for the defence.
Babel, Kuyt and Torres up front (Kuyt and Babel can tuck back in and convert the 4-3-3 to 4-5-1 when Chelsea have the ball).

Too right - we need to attack rather than contain Chelsea, as Reading proved they are vulnerable - I would be very confident with the Chief and Alonso feeding Babel, Kuyt and Torres.

I don't think he's injured, I think Rafa is just playing a game.

My thoughts as well.
My guess for Fantasy Rafa is going to have Gerrard-Xabi-Masch-Babel in the middle and I reckon that we are playing jose at his own game by saying he isn't fit and then he'll play.

if he's fit then brilliant if not then we have enough quality central midfielders to step in. no better opportunity to prove we're not a one man team.

Unless he's actually broken his toe surely he will be fit.

Same here. I fully expect Sideshow Bob (now with a skinhead), Essien and Mongo to be fit.

Re: Gerrard out for Sunday?
If there's a doubt Rafa should leave him out. They can afford to play a destroyer to put him out for weeks.....................

Maybe as a right winger but I think Rafa will definetly start with two forwards on sunday, hence the rest for Torres and Kuyt yesterday.
If Gerrard is injured i'd start with Masch and Xabi in the middle. The chief to do the destroying, and give Alonso the chance to rise to the occasion in the way he has done when Gerrard's been absent in the past.
