Bellamy charged for assault

Fucking hell.

Bellamy charged with assaultJul 2 2006

Marc Baker, Wales on Sunday

LIVERPOOL star Craig Bellamy has been charged with assaulting a teenage girl in an alleged nightclub bust-up.

The Wales striker, who has just signed a £6m four-year deal with the Premiership side, is facing two counts of assault after a 19-year-old from Barry claimed the player struck her in a Cardiff club.

Bellamy, 26, was charged by South Wales Police on Friday morning, a month after his glittering wedding to childhood sweetheart Claire Jansen. If he is found guilty, he could receive a maximum sentence of six months in prison.

The multi-millionaire dad-of-two was surrounded by his family and friends when he tied the knot in a low-key ceremony near his £2m home in St Brides-super-Ely, near Cardiff.

But Bellamy, whose contract with Liverpool FC began yesterday, was charged after returning from honeymoon as he answered his bail in connection with the alleged assault.

And just hours after he was charged, we snapped Bellamy parking his black Bentley Continental sports car with personalised number plates on double yellow lines outside The Cornerstone pub in City Road, Cardiff.

The pint-sized footballer is also due in court this month for driving without insurance and failing to produce an insurance certificate. He has denied the charges which relate to an incident last November.

Last night, Bellamy's agent Steve Horner said he "had nothing to say" in connection with the alleged assault at Number 10 in the trendy Mill Lane area of Cardiff.

The former Blackburn Rovers striker was arrested by police in March after a 19-year-old girl claimed he struck her at the bar and restaurant during a night out on Sunday, February 5.

The alleged victim complained of suffering bruising to her arm and neck. She told two passing police officers about the alleged assault inside the club, a favourite with celebrities in Cardiff.

Police went into Number 10 to get CCTV footage and witness statements. The girl spent three hours making a statement at a police station.

According to reports, Bellamy - who earns £50,000 a week - was partying with a friend when there was an altercation between him and the girl as she was walking through a narrow part of the club's VIP section.

Bellamy later voluntarily went to Cardiff Central Police Station where he was arrested and released on bail.

Last night, South Wales Police confirmed Bellamy had been charged following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 26-year-old man has been charged with two counts of Section 39 assault. He was charged after answering his bail on Friday morning. No court date has yet been fixed."

Bellamy was arrested along with another man in connection with the allegation. Police say no action has yet been taken against the other male.

The player, who was born in Rumney, Cardiff, and returns regularly to visit his parents Angela and Doug, has already been told to shed his bad boy image by Liverpool FC.

Manager Rafa Benitez warned him he will be measured against fellow Welsh goal hero Ian Rush - Liverpool's all-time top goal-scorer with an awesome 346 strikes. But despite his reputation off the field, fellow Welsh soccer great Neville Southall believes Liverpool FC will be the "making of Bellamy".

He said: "People keep referring to Craig's bad reputation but he didn't misbehave at Blackburn last season because he respected Mark Hughes. He has recently got married so perhaps he is maturing as a man. This move to Liverpool could be the making of him."

Bellamy's decision to join the Reds has been welcomed by skipper Steven Gerrard, despite a series of rows on the pitch between the pair.

"I've had a few arguments with Craig myself on the pitch a few times, but funnily enough, that's something I like about him," said Gerrard.

Bellamy's fiery temper has also been noted by his dad, who has said: "He can be a bit of a hothead at times. Yes, we know he can be feisty. But what would Craig be without that feistiness in his character?"

A spokesperson for Liverpool FC was unavailable for comment last night.

Hate to say I told you so. That said, it could be nothing and I'd rather wait till I find out what happened till I properly judge the lad.

You really think the club would of signed him if they thought there was any chance he'd go down? I'd imagine they've looked at all the evidence and had lawyers decide themselves that fuck all will happen to him. Theres no "told you so" in this at all

As it says in the report, this happened in February. Maybe we should give him a chance to turn over a new leaf, after all, his contract only started yesterday.

But is there a chance now we could lose him if he gets found guilty?

Could he do time for this?

I very much doubt it. These days you only serve about three weeks for killing someone; even if he is found guilty (and it appears to be his word against hers) then he ain't going to gaol.

And let's be honest, it's probably some fucking slag looking to get a quick buck. It's probably just bullshit.

Fucking hell, what sort of a rag is Wales on Sunday? The earliest opportunity to slag him after his Liverpool contract began yesterday and they take it - for a story that's months old. I'm still unsure about Bellamy, but this is shoddy fucking journalism.

The CPS wouldn't charge him without some degree of evidence.
