Transfer Record
As a club we have broken the british transfer record on a number of occasions
Dalglish
Lawrenson
Beardsley
Saunders
& Stan Collymore.
But when was that quite sometime ago, the truth is that we probably will never break the transfer record ever again and that says it all about what we have to do to compete at the top level.
I have accepted that and for someone who was around in the 70s & 80s its much harder to accept that we wont be getting the very best players but like Arsenal have to look at the next tier down. ie the players Real, Chelski & Manu dont want.
Even 100m of new investment wont fix the fundamentals of the club, so this summer when we dont buy Joaquin's, SWPs & Andrade's of this world as a fan even though it will be hard i will accept that we can no longer buy the very very best players however there will be a few of you who wont be able to acccept it
Like Arsenal however we will be able to compete with a great manager at the helm for the first time having his players that he can trust to carry out his instructions and making a real PL challenge in season 2006-2007

Re: Transfer Record
Since when was competeing at the top level judged by the number of transfer records you break?
And for the record since when were SWP and Andrade the 'very very best players'?

Re: Transfer Record
Dont forget Babb.
Think we broke the record for a defender when we signed him
Anyways, it seems to me we can compete against other clubs for the very best, Alonso as a prime example. The pulling power of LFC and Rafa is in many cases worth more than having or not having but spending anyway, absurd amounts of money.
And should we get investment you can bet your arse on we will compete for the signatures for the likes of Joaquin, SWP, Vicente.

The point being we havent broken it for sometime and we are unlikely to break it again but in the past we did break it for Dalglish, Lawrenson & Beardsley.
I have come to terms with the fact that we'll never break it again unfortunately some fans havent

Chelsea and Real Madrid are probably the only ones who will break it. ffs you make out like we are now only as good as Doncaster or something.
Get a fucking grip. We've signed some absolute class this season and attracted one of the best managers in Europe.

good post evil one
Alonso, Garcia & Morientes is a good example of how we can compete and i for one am very optimistic for the future. the point i was trying to make is if Real had come in for Alonso (which was on the cards for sometime) then the price would have gone up and even if Alonso wanted to come to us then the overall package would have been beyond our reach.
The investment issue is more delicate as once you have spent the money its gone and you cant have it again. Personally id prefer to see the money ploughed into the stadium and then get the financial benefit of extra income every year rather than spending it on players that may or maynot work out.
some people however will get upset and uptight with the players we sign this summer. i for one wont and i am genuinely very excited for the future but i also think we will be at our best once the new stadium is completed

Re: Transfer Record
Liverpool has plenty of spending power. We spent very large sums of money under Houllier even if we didn't break any records. The reason our budget won't be that big this summer is because we've spent so much in the past and becasue we're building a new stadium. Also, Arsenal getting the best players has nothing to do with wealth, Houllier spent way more than Wenger ever did. Its about skill in the transfer market.

Totally agree with you 100%, Arsenal should be our role model to overtake on and off the pitch, the other two are going to be more difficult

Re: Transfer Record
I personally think we will spend more this summer than what has been the case for the last few summers.
And i reckon we'll see the back of quite a few players to help fund that.
It's clear IMO we need at least 2 quality signings in defence and two in midfield.
Up front i reckon we're sorted, unless Baros leaves.
We dont have a choice this summer, we have to spend quite big and absolutely right
for us to catch up.

Re: Transfer Record
Diouf cost £11m, Alonso £10m, Owen, Fowler and Gerrard nothing. In the past, Beardsley and Dalglish cost a fortune for the time, Keegan cost £35,000. Getting the right players is the issue, not whether we break any records. Recent football history is full of massive money being paid for flops (but then I've already mentioned Diouf).

Re: Transfer Record
Exactly Brian.
It's about spending the money on the right players.
Something we have failed miserably at during the last few seasons.
However, in our situation i would say it's impossible, at least nearly, to sign the players we need for less than £8-10 million plus a piece.

Re: Transfer Record
We might not have the spending power right now of Chelski but who is to say that in the future some billionaire or someone with alot of money wont buy the club,in which case we could break many a transfer record.
I can see your point but most of the Liverpool greats, past and present cost little or came through the system.
