More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

According to $ky, Garcia has spoken of his wish to bring in El Moro in January and yesterday I read that the attacker Javier Portillo has been recalled from his loan deal in Italy to Real Madrid in January.... all signs points towards a transfer deal for Morientes in January, or is it just that I want us to sign him so bad, it's clouding my judgement?

From: http://skysports.planetfootball.com/....asp?id=236941

Liverpool's Luis Garcia believes that Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes is the man to solve the club's goalscoring problems.

The Reds are among the highest scorers in The Premiership, but have netted just once in the two ensuing games following Djibril Cisse's injury.

Cisse is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines following his broken leg and with Morientes out of the first-team picture at Real, Garcia knows who he thinks the club should bring in during the January transfer window.

Morientes, who was loaned to French side Monaco for last season, has started just a handful of games for Real this term behind the likes of Raul, Ronaldo and Michael Owen.

"Now that we do not have Djibril, it is important to bring in a new striker to rotate the squad," said Garcia.

"It would be great to bring in Morientes. It could even be the key to success for us.

"Cisse is a very good player and we'll miss him. It was very hard to see a team-mate crying out in agony and we all feel for him."

The most significant thing to watch will be the number of games MO gets before the end of the year.If he is clearly ahead of Morientes then Morientes will want to go and Real will decide to cash in.

Re: More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

Gotta be honest i'm not overly keen on Morientes but if we could get him in on a decent deal then of course its something we have to look at.

We can't carry on past January the way we are thats for sure.

As for Morientes as a player, there's no doubt he's a great finisher, im just not that impressed with his all round play. I just don't fancy him as a player - there's nothing major that sticks out bad about him, just not my cup of tea. That not to say he couldn't some here and do well, I just think if we get some investment before January there would be more viable options.

Morientes is a world class striker. Can't think of any reason not to sign him other than he is over 25 but that doesn't stop me wanting him!

I think his signing would be the least questioned in many years. All we can do is applaud the club if they pull it off which I believe they will.

Afterall who would believe we could possibly attract a player of Xabi's calibre to the club.

Re: More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

World Class is a term too loosely used I feel. Watching Morientes in the Euro's he looked decent but not world class. I know he was the Champions League top scorer last season, but horseface has been in the past and no-one will ever convince me that he's not over-rated.

He's a good player (Morientes), there's no doubt about that, but I just have a bad feeling where he's concerned - no idea why. Bit like Dave with Stephen Carr.

Re: More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

World Class strikers consistently score goals in World and Euro cups, CL (including the final) and at domestic level. Morientes fits the bill in all of those categories we should be moving heaven and earth to get someone of that calibre on board. Not only is he a goalscorer but a good footballer who can link well with team mates. His signing would be a very positive step - who can honestly say that they would not be excited by the prospect of watching him play in tandem with Baros?

Re: More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

Reality check dudes: Morientes does not score loads of goals. Yes he scored a hatful in the CL last year, but how many in the league.

If anything, it's his all-round play that makes him so appealing not his finishing. His awareness and touch are just amazing as his ability to play a neat little thru-ball to his partner up front.
He's a class act but a 25 goals+ a season goalscorer he ain't I'm afraid.

Re: More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

I agree with 25+ remark Tom R he's not that type of forward but the reality is he is a striker of a much higher standard than most currently playing in the Prem, and he has an excellent record over the years. Lets not forget he has been criminally underused by Real over the lst 3 or 4 seasons yet has still managed to contribute for club and country when given opportunities. Given a run in the Prem and up against some of the piss poor defending he'll encounter who's to say he won't add to his average tally?

Luis could go a long way to improving our goal scoring by upping his strike rate per 100 chances created!

Re: More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

Gotta agree with Tom R this time. He's spot on about Morientes.

Playing as the support to a willing runner like Baros is exciting thought.

Like someone else mentioned I just hope that Mickey just keeps scoring between now and Xmas, altough the fact that Camacho has gone has an influence on Morienetes position at Real IMO.

I heard that Camacho convinced Morientes that he was a big part of his plans and that made him stay. Mickey would have been fourth in line had Camacho still been in charge and Morienetes would never have considered leaving if he was playing reasonably regularly. But all thats changed now.

Lets get him in if we can.

Correct, he is brilliant in the air though. But no, I don't think anything more than £5m on a 29 year old is worth it.

Re: More to the Morientes transfer than we're being told?

he would make a huge difference to our team and would be the first striker at the club that would actually play the way Rafa requires.

The obvious question is could Baros play with him

If the stikers score in excess of 30 league goals between them it doesn't matter if they can form a partnership does it?

Your right to a degree but for example if you have a striker who can hold the ball up the opponents get the ball less and therefore have less time to score against you, hence the difference between home and away form
