Forwards

Who is going to be available in January within our price range? Forwards who will get you 20 to 30 goals a season don't come cheap, unless they are out of contract in the summer! Who is in this situation?

Just basing your question on the British market, these sprung to mind. I've thrown in a few wild cards for fun.

Teddy Sheringham. Still banging them in for West Ham. Although the fact that the board wouldn't sanction his purchase when Roy Evans wanted him in 1997 as he was "too old" probably rules that out.

Alan Shearer would have been an option if Robson was still manager, relations between the two were so fraught. Who knows, he may fall out with Souness before then thus facilitating the move.

Louis Saha. With Van Nist, Rooney and Alan "Badgekisser" Smith all vying for a starting place, Saha is surely at least thinking about his future. Too good for their reserves.

Emile Heskey. With Birmingham fans in no doubt how rubbish he is, perhaps a cheeky £2m bid would bring back our Messiah.

Chris Sutton. Target man. Stop sniggering - he's done well in Europe for Celtic, not just in the rubbish SPL.

Freddie Kanoute. We were once linked with an £8m bid for him in the depths of the GH years. Wouldn't cost that much now. Trips home to Mali for international duty might be a problem.

El Hadj...Nah, forget it.

Re: Forwards

I could cope with Shearer, wasn't he close to coming before? Saha i always thought was shit as is Kanoute, What about Robbie Keane, too similar to Defoe and would be more likely to get him, should stop those stupid goal celebeations though!

Re: Forwards

I think Saha is a really good striker and would be a hell of a player if he wasn't so injury prone. Wouldn't mind him at Anfield myself like.

Re: Forwards

As we don't have much cash and we only need a stop gap Shearer would be perfect. Why pay >£5m for somebody who won't get a game when Cisse is fit?

There is somebody else who would be available and is younger than Shearer. Apparently he is still scoring regularly as well. Anybody got Collymore's phone number?

Sheringham - Too old.
Heskey - Too crap.
Sutton - See above.
Kanoute - Good, but not good enough.

We need a player who can drop off the front and link up play, hold up the ball and of course the ability to score a bagful of goals.

Out of the realistic premiership targets, there's not many players that are good enough.

I'd take Shearer as a short term replacement. Plus he can teach the other strikers a thing or two.

Saha could do the job but the mancs would never sell him to us.

The only other player that comes to mind and is a realistic premiership target is Anelka. I think he could be the perfect match for us.

Agreed...He still has the potential to be as good as Henry, and how many players can you say that about.
Granted he had serious attitude problems before, but I'd imagine they're over him.
Didn't leave on bad terms with anyone bar GH and Thompson, and even then I thought he was quite dignified in his comments afterwards.

Stomach turning to think we passed on him to sign Diouf instead.

How much would he be at this stage though? And I'm sure Salif Diao would love to line up in Citeh colours as part of the deal.

"Didn't leave on bad terms with anyone bar GH and Thompson". Oh yeah, and they just happened to be the manager and his assistant.

He's caused trouble at every club he's been associated with, I think we've had enough of that kind of player over the last few years. He wouldn't come cheaply either. Forget him.

Yakubu Ayegbeni is class. Buy him, and send Diao and Diouf the other way. (wasn't Portsmouth interrested in D & D?)

I meant that he left on bad terms because he felt - quite rightly - that they'd been leading him on, assuring him that the loan deal would be made permanent.

To the best of my knowledge, he never caused any hassle while at the club, unlike say, that clown Diouf.

Re: Forwards

Hre's an example of the problems he's had at previous clubs, from the man himself.

.........................................
Nicolas Anelka
2003-09-02
World Soccer: You left Arsenal saying English football didn't suit you; so why come back?
Nicolas Anelka: I refute the claims that I was disillusioned with English football - it was always in my mind to come back at some stage. I left Arsenal because it had been a dream, since I was a young boy growing up in Paris, that if I had the chance to play for Real Madrid, I would pursue that goal. Things didn't work out for me there, but now I am back in English football and hope to make the most of my opportunity this time.

So what went wrong with your 'dream move'?
Basically, Real did not suit my style of play. At the beginning I was enjoying myself and was accustomed to the system of our coach, John Toshack. Unfortunately, results were not in keeping with the demands of the supporters and the press, and everyone was pointing the finger at me and the huge transfer fee. The arrival of Vicente Del Bosque only hindered my situation and I soon realised that I did not fit into his system of play. I was delighted to return home to Paris Saint-Germain.

You're now at Liverpool. How did it come about?
Everybody is aware I was having problems at PSG. I didn't always agree with the direction of the club, and my relationship with the coach [Luis Fernandez] was not as amiable as it should have been. But sometimes in football things do not go your way, and I found myself out of the team. So when the chance came to join a club of Liverpool's stature, I weighed up my options and thought it was the best move for me at this stage of my career.

Re: Forwards

The players and staff all liked Nico when he was here and i always remember Houllier's face when he scored against Ipswich in the final game of 2001-02 season he looked like the cat had pissed in his tea. Nico was told 'not to talk the club up' during his time here by a certain ex asst manager and he was never a problem here. When he came here on loan I wasn't happy but he won me over by working hard and showing a good attitude and his display in the 3-0 v Newcastle was one of the best i have ever saw by a Liverpool player.

Re: Forwards

It's all very well listing names but has RB really decided how he wants his front players to play yet ? If his intention is to stick with MB and DC then that is what he will go for. He won't want a stop gap player who can't fit in , otherwise MB / DC will be back to playing getting to know you again next season. So who fits the vacancy ? If he goes looking in Spain, or anywhere else for that matter, the price will get hi-jacked, so he's going to look at closing down sales.
Anelka.

Re: Forwards

Anelka would fucking rule. How anyone can suggest otherwise is a bit weird for me.
He scores goals everywhere he's been, he enjoyed his time here and didn't want to leave and he's quite simply a world class player we could pick up at a reasonable price.
Yes please.

There is no better alternative, in the Premiership at least.
If we're gonna start looking abroad then Spain is the only country I reckon we should be looking at (based on how quickly Spaniarfds seem to adjust to Anfield!) And therefore Morientes is the number 1 target for me, unless of course Raul fancies a loan move? Mighty Mick is clearly showing him up at the moment afterall! ;-)
Nice one Michael!

But, I reckon I'd rather have Anelka than Morientes. He scores more goals. Simple as that.
