All well and good, but Gerrard has a good relationship with Bascombe, and only had to say to him off the record that he is staying. Wouldn't need any quotes, but it would allow the Echo to get the message out. That's all that is needed, and you'd have to be pretty stupid to assume that Bascombe hasn't tried to get him to do just that. He wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't.
The Echo's stance is that there's a very good chance he's going, and they've alluded to the 'Lampard factor' on several occasions. There's a reason for that. It's because Gerrard won't say anything to put the speculation to bed, and no doubt they have other sources who have informed them what's going on. Players or staff at the club probably, as I'm sure they know exactly what's going on.
The Echo does not indulge in unfounded speculation, and Bascombe's record on these things speaks for itself. If the Echo are concerned about it, then so should all of us be.
And as for all this "he's waiting to see what the board do"???? Bollocks. He's told people that he's going to Chelsea. That's not keeping his options open, it's called wanting to leave.
If people don't want to believe that, fine, but I am 100% certain that he has told people he's going. Obviously I'm not going to say where that come from, as it would drop people in it, but the source is rock solid.
The situation as it stands is not good. It's gone so far that it's almost as though he's a Chelsea player now, and that Liverpool have to try and persuade him to join us. Unless Benitez can give him the hard sell and persuade him to change his mind, he's gone, as his head is at the Bridge already.
But frankly, I'm sick of talking about him now. If he wants to go to Chelsea, he can fucking go. If he changes his mind and stays, fine. But either way, I'll never look at him the same way again. If it was any other player I could sort of understand it. But this is the captain of the club, and someone who we thought cared about the club as much as we do.
