Home Cinema/AV/Subwoofer Speaker Cable

http://www.eu.onkyo.com/dl/962201/TX-SR505_En.pdf

Bought the above today, with the plan to use it with my existing set of surround sound speakers and subwoofer.

Thing is, while the speaker cable inputs on the above are what I expected (normal speaker cable where you twizzle the cable and lock it in) the subwoofer input on the back of the AV is expecting some sort of other input type (on the old pro logic thingy is was the same standard speaker cable input as the normal speakers)

If you can make sense of the above, can you tell me what I need to get my subwoofer input to the av box?

Re: Home Cinema/AV/Subwoofer Speaker Cable

I think what you are probably looking for is a subwoofer cable ham, if I'm understanding you correctly, look at this sitehere

It's what I connect my sub to my av receiver with so I think it should be the same.

Re: Home Cinema/AV/Subwoofer Speaker Cable

The subwoofer itself has no input apart from the bare wire (like with a normal speaker cable) so I am not sure that's right. I need the other end to have an input though to go into the receiver.

Re: Home Cinema/AV/Subwoofer Speaker Cable

Not sure if this is any help or makes any sense but I lifted the following from here

What are the different ways of hooking up a subwoofer?

The first method works with all amplifiers and receivers whether they are set up for home theater reproduction or not. Connect the positive speaker terminal of the receiver/amp to the corresponding (right channel, left channel, etc.) positive speaker input terminal on the subwoofer. Then connect the negative speaker lead from the amp/receiver in the same manner. Repeat for the next speaker. Connect the speaker leads from the receiver (main L&R) to the subwoofer speaker level inputs. Then run wire from the sub speaker level outputs to your main L&R speakers. This method allows the subwoofer to produce the low frequencies, sending the upper bass, midrange and high frequencies to each connected speaker. Most subwoofers have controls so that the user can determine the range of low frequencies they want the sub to produce.

Re: Home Cinema/AV/Subwoofer Speaker Cable

For anyone interested, the difference is the difference between a "passive" and "active" subwoofer.

Net result, is I have to buy a new set of speakers.

New speakers all round, not just a new sub?

I could have just bought a new sub.

The plan was just to use my existing rubbishy speakers and buy a new set in a few months (when the wallet recovers from the beating it took this weekend)

For about the price of a separate sub you can get a full set anyway, so the wallet took an even bigger pounding. All the old shit will be going on Ebay to recoup some of the money.

Sounds like a good set up. I <3 my Onkyo 605.

Re: Home Cinema/AV/Subwoofer Speaker Cable

Aye. Managed to get it all set up last night. Its very good. Having the powered subwoofer is better anyway, because it has a volume control, so I don't have to shake the foundations of the house whenever a film is on.

Those AV receivers are ugly creatures, mind. I need to read the manual properly to work out what its really capable of. All I have done so far is the basic set up with the supplied mic. At the moment, the PS3 and the Sky are going through it. Do you yours for anything else?

Re: Home Cinema/AV/Subwoofer Speaker Cable

I've got a Virgin Media Pace box, the PS3, a DVD player/recorder and the PC audio running through it.

Aye there are all sorts of baffling options. I just use the Audyssey settings and then adjusted the speaker levels.

I've got a separate Mordaunt Short sub and some new bi-polar side surround speakers, bloody marvellous for watching films.

If you look on AV forums there are some Onkyo owners threads and an Onkyo/PS3 owners thread which are dead useful for getting the most out of the systems.

I'm glad I'm not your neighbour, although the thought of your popping your head through my kitchen window shouting "Only TKaaayyyyy!" makes the noise worth it.

I'm gonna get into the market for a surround system myself. Whats the cheapest set-up? I just want to base it around my sofa so all other noise is muffed out.

I'm thinking of

My neighbours love me.

I don't know about a cheap set up. You can get "all in one" surround systems from the likes of Panasonic, I think, but I went down the separates route.

If you need an all in one surround as TK pointed out there is a cheap one here

I have the old version of this another here

No complaints as yet from next door but plenty from the wife
